Most importantly, you'd earn unique rewards, such as some of the best weapons and upgrades that can be obtained just a few hours after starting the campaign.

Likes from missions and lost cargo deliveries

Most of the time you spend going through the campaign involves tackling missions and delivering goods to various facilities/bases. As you're out and about exploring, you'll see containers that have been left behind. These are considered lost cargo, and they need to be handed over to a particular NPC/settlement.

Each lost cargo that you pick up grants a certain number of likes in Death Stranding 2. Picking it up nets you +1 like from the NPC/settlement leader, and delivering it grants you the listed amount as a reward. Just make sure that the contents themselves don't get heavily damaged.

Note that it's also possible to entrust your cargo to other porters. You'll earn a few likes for doing this as well.

Likes from optional objectives

You also get more likes in Death Stranding 2 if you complete an optional objective that's part of a mission/task. Here's an example:

  • You need to deliver fragile/breakable cargo to a settlement. That means you must ensure that the cargo is in pristine condition and that you're able to repair the container.
  • A requirement might be one that asks you to bring the goods with less than 5% damage.
  • If you're able to do this successfully, you'll earn bonus likes on top of the amount granted by the cargo itself.

There are also other optional objectives, such as clearing a base without taking too much health damage or delivering an item within a given timeframe.

Likes from aid requests

While roaming around, you might spot holograms of NPCs in areas. These are known as aid requests, with objectives ranging from delivering items and repairing broken-down machinery to constructing highways across the countryside.

  • You can press the right-hand side of the PS5 DualSense controller's touchpad to do a "like/thumbs up" emote in front of the hologram. This causes your companion, Dollman, to reward you with +10 likes.
  • Of course, the NPC who made the request will reward you with likes once you've done your job, too.

Likes from the Social Strand System

The Social Strand System (SSS) is the game's own social media app of sorts. And, yes, you can earn Death Stranding 2 likes through this feature as well. All you need to do is like the new posts that pop up. Some of these posts appear as part of progression, though the majority come from leveling up your connection/reputation with various factions in regions.

Likes from keeping Lou in a good mood

Lou is Sam's beloved baby companion, and you should remember to keep her in a good mood. Here's a quick summary:

  • Lou's mood will turn sour if you take damage in combat or if you fall and stumble due to all the loot that you're lugging around. She'll then pout and start crying.
  • You can soothe Lou by holding the L1 button and pressing the down button on the D-pad. You should be able to gently rock Lou by shaking the controller.
  • Lou can stay in a good mood while you're traveling. For instance, if you activate your vehicle's speed boost, she'll enjoy the ride and give you +5 likes. If you're roaming around and nothing unfortunate has happened to you for a while, then her persistent good mood will net you +20 likes. She also enjoys traveling via the Monorail and Zipline.

Likes from porter NPCs

You might run into porter NPCs who are carrying all sorts of wares from one area to the next. You can approach them and press the right-hand side of the touch pad to do a "like/thumbs up" emote. The porter NPC (or Dollman) will reward you with "likes" in return.

Likes from completing VR training simulations

VR training simulations can be accessed via private rooms in facilities, where you'll be able to enter an area to view and test weapons. Simulation programs include defeating enemies with your armaments, stealthily clearing bases, and delivering cargo.

These activities are great if you want to familiarize yourself with certain mechanics or firearms, especially if you're new to action-adventure games. Once you've completed these drills, then you'd receive a few hundred likes for your achievements.

Likes from other players

There are several ways to earn Death Stranding 2 likes from other players, just as there are a plethora of methods wherein you'd be able to give likes to others. This system becomes active as long as you're connected to the game's online services. It's somewhat akin to a community-driven effort:

  • The structures you build, such as Bridges, Generators, and Watchtowers, might be seen by others who are online. You earn likes if people interact with or trigger these, as well as when they manually give you likes as well.
  • You can place signs to ask for assistance, be it for combat purposes, repairing/building stuff in the region, or just to leave your mark in an area.
  • If others follow the path you tread--i.e. they ran/drove along the same route to reach a location--you gain a few likes, too.
  • Design and customize your vehicle so that players find it cool enough if they see it in their game.
  • Resting in the wilderness creates a cairn hologram. Other players who rest in the same spot add more stones and improve the restoration properties of the cairn. Of course, people can "like" the placement of the cairn as well.
  • You can create a Strand Contract via the SSS menu. This lets you and another player share/use structures and resources more frequently in your respective games.

Note: To maximize the potential likes that you can obtain from other players, we suggest leveling up your Bridge Link tree so you can activate higher-tier Bridge Link skills via the APAS Enhancements menu.

Likes from shared cargo donations and deliveries

Lastly, if you take a look at the terminals in facilities, you'll see the option for shared cargo. This panel allows you to do the following:

  • You can donate your resources, gear, and lost cargo to the shared storage in that settlement to earn likes. Other players will be able to pick these up if they wish, though you won't be able to retrieve them anymore.
  • You may also grab the lost cargo left by other players and deliver them yourself. You'll earn additional likes for your efforts.
