visionOS 26 Could Turn Vision Pro into a Real Gaming Machine

The Apple Vision Pro headset is limited in its use. Sure, there are some games and immersive content, but it’s hard to justify paying $3,500 for that. However, that could change in the next visionOS update. According to a 9to5Mac report, Apple could introduce support for spatial controllers in visionOS 26.
Spatial controllers coming in visionOS 26
As it stands, the Vision Pro supports game controllers used with consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation. However, its use is limited in that it can only be used with Apple Arcade games. Since not everyone is an Apple One subscriber, and Apple Arcade has considerably fewer games compared to the rest of the App Store, this doesn’t leave gamers with many options.
However, the 9to5Mac report claims that Apple will address this in visionOS 26. In the update, Apple will alert users when they download a title that requires a PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi controller. It will also notify users when a game requires users to have spatial controllers, like the PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers, for example.
This means that in the future, Vision Pro gamers will be able to play more games using controllers. This could widen the appeal of the headset, which honestly isn’t selling as well as Apple would like. However, we have to wonder if controller support still justifies paying $3,500 for the headset, but we’ll see.
An earlier report claims that Apple approached Sony towards the end of 2024. Both companies apparently agreed to work together to expand support for the VR2’s hand controllers on the Vision Pro. Apple also reached out to third-party developers to ask them to integrate support in their games.
When is visionOS 26 dropping?
The jump from visionOS 1.0 to 26 is a huge leap in terms of numbers. However, that’s because Apple is apparently changing the naming scheme of its software updates. The company now plans to use the year for its update names. This means that we’ll be looking at updates such as iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, WatchOS 26, and visionOS 26.
Apple will share more details about its software updates at WWDC 2025. The event is scheduled for the 9th of June, where we can look forward to the rumored major UI revamp of iOS 26, and hopefully more AI updates from Apple.
