We don't get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it's the most common letter in the game, it's only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Today's Wordle answer (game #1448) is… EDIFY.

Full disclosure: I wasn't entirely sure what EDIFY meant until I looked it up afterwards, although I did know that it was a word and knew to play it late on when the letters pointed in that direction. Honest!

Is that a terrible thing for me to admit? Possibly. I think I could have taken a good stab at a definition but if I'd had to write a dictionary entry for it then I would not have been in my comfort zone. You can't be an expert in everything, right?

That's probably one of the reasons why this is another relatively difficult Wordle to solve; as with yesterday's DATUM, it's just not a commonly used word.

I don't think it's the only reason, though. For starters, some of the letters are also in uncommon places.

E is the most common letter overall, but it's really not found at the start of an answer very often; it ranks 14th in this regard. D is also far more likely to be at the start or end than it is in the second position, and F is not a regular visitor to the fourth spot.

With that in mind, I suspect lots of people will have had yellows for several guesses but will have struggled to turn them green. That was how my game went, to an extent.

Start words will also have been a factor. DATUM was undoubtedly a tricky game yesterday, but if you started with ADIEU or AUDIO it will have been a lot easier.

Today, only ADIEU really helped, cutting the options to only a pair. Given that AUDIO is itself played by many people each day, but here left 106 possibles, the average will have been lifted.

Speaking of which, EDIFY has an average score of 4.1, which makes it the equal toughest (with QUASH and GRIFT) since FOLIO several weeks ago (though we still haven't had a really, really hard one since EAGER in mid May).

My opening HAVEN gave me a yellow E and left 300-plus words. But it took me three more guesses to convert that E to a green, with my second attempt STORE and third YIELD merely moving it around the board.

YIELD did at least do a lot of heavy lifting, giving me three further yellows and leaving a choice of EDIFY or DEIFY. I didn't think of the latter of those, so played the former (despite not really knowing what it meant!) and took my four.

D is the ninth most common starting letter in the game, so maybe slightly less likely than you might expect.

There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was M.

M is a middling ending letter: it ranks 13th in this regard, and only completes 42 Wordle answers overall.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1447) was… DATUM.

DATUM must be one of the least widely used words we've had in recent weeks. IDIOM and SHUCK are both up there, sure, but unless you're a scientist, would you ever use DATUM in your daily life?

That probably explains why the average is 3.9, so higher than for Wednesday's CEASE despite having no repeated letters as that word does.

In fact, I'd wager that it would be far above that if not for the performance of the two most popular start words, ADIEU and AUDIO, which left 8 and 5 possible solutions respectively.

As regular readers will know, I'm not a fan of these as start words because they are objectively not as good as many, many others. It seems like such a waste to start with one of them when you could play SLATE or CRANE or something.

Then again, every dog has its day and sometimes they perform very well. Yesterday was a case in point.

I was not so lucky, with BINGO leaving 904 choices; irony doing its thing nicely there, eh?

For my second guess I went with an ER ending to guard against that possible trap, in the form of TASER. This was a little better, giving me a yellow T and green A.

I now had 19 options and immediately realized that lurking among them was an arguably even worse trap than the ER one: CATCH, LATCH, PATCH, HATCH, MATCH and WATCH. I also had MALTY, FAULT and VAULT.

I needed a word to rule out as many of those as I could, and CLUMP was the best I could do. This would guarantee that at worst I'd have a 50/50 between two of those -ATCH words, and it was exactly the same choice that WordleBot made.

As it turned out, the answer wasn't an -ATCH word – and better still CLUMP left only one option. It took me a while to realize that it was DATUM, and I was relieved to see all five letters turn green when they did.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
