Apple has been at the forefront of adopting the latest and most advanced semiconductor technology for its devices. So, it’s not surprising that Apple will use the 2nm process for its A20 chipset in the iPhone 18 Pro, which will be released in 2026.
iPhone 18 Pro with 2nm chipset
This latest piece of information comes from analyst Jeff Pu. According to a research note shared with equity research firm GF Securities, Pu claims he expects the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone to be equipped with a 2nm Apple A20 chipset. He also claims that Apple will make some design changes to the chip.
Pu says the A20 chip will use TSMC’s newer Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) chip packaging technology. This means that the phone’s RAM will be integrated directly onto the chip’s wafer, alongside the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, as opposed to sitting adjacent to the chip.
What does this mean for the user experience? On paper, we’re looking at potentially faster performance, better energy efficiency, and better thermals. The smaller 2nm process also means that Apple has more space internally. This could allow Apple to fit in more components or use that space for a larger battery.
2026’s iPhone 18 lineup
Apple will announce the iPhone 18 series in 2026. The lineup is rumored to consist of the base iPhone 18, the iPhone 18 Air, the iPhone 18 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. However, it is also rumored that Apple will introduce its first-ever foldable iPhone in 2026. It is also one of the alleged reasons behind the launch of the iPhone 17 Air. Apple wanted to see if it could successfully fit iPhone components into a considerably slimmer body.
The lineup will also most likely use the A20 chipset. It’s not the first time we’ve heard about Apple using a 2nm chipset. Given Apple’s progression so far, it actually makes sense. However, Apple isn’t alone in going the 2nm route. We’re hearing that other companies, such as Qualcomm, could launch their own 2nm chipsets in 2026 as well.
