If you’re an Android user, there’s a good chance that Google’s Gboard could be your keyboard app of choice. There are many things to love about Gboard, such as Google search integration, strong predictive text capabilities, and more. However, Google isn’t resting on its laurels. A recent APK teardown has revealed some changes that are coming to Gboard.

Gboard changes are coming to Emoji Kitchen

According to the folks over at Android Authority and AssembleDebug, they have conducted an APK teardown of the Gboard app for Android. Based on what they found, it appears that Google is working on some changes that are coming to the Gboard app. When will it arrive? That remains to be seen, but here’s what they’ve discovered so far.

For starters, Google could soon allow Gboard users to add Emoji Kitchen combos to a favorites list. This means that if you’re someone who has created a set of emoji mashups, you can access them quickly. It will save you time from having to create them from scratch again or accessing them from the recents page.

While we’re on the topic of Emoji Kitchen, another change that is coming is a search bar. However, as Android Authority points out, this duplicates the search bar in the Emoji Kitchen browse page. We’re not sure if it was done by mistake or if Google is looking to relocate the search bar.

Other features we can expect

Next, the APK teardown revealed a new feature called “SmartEdit.” The code string reads, “SmartEdit helps you add, remove, or replace words easily with just your voice.” However, Gboard already allows users to edit text using voice commands. Android Authority speculates that this means that Google is working to expand the feature with more commands.

Another feature that seems redundant on the surface is “Smart Reply,” found in Writing Tools. Gboard already has a Smart Reply feature on Pixel phones, but this feature relies on Gemini Nano to come up with more contextual and smarter replies. However, the report suggests that this could be used in the cloud for improved suggestions.

Google is also looking to change how users can disable Smart Reply. Before this, users had to dive pretty deep into their phone’s settings. However, this change will make it easier for users to disable the feature if they choose.

Last but not least, there are signs that Pixel Sense/Magic Cue could see tighter integration with Gboard. This feature takes info from apps based on context, so Gboard integration could make it easier to access.

There’s currently no word on when these changes will be released. There’s a chance that some might not make the final cut, but we’ll have to wait and see.
