China’s EV Market Sees Steady Growth with Record Numbers

As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to expand its reach the worldwide, we’re starting to see some impressive figures from markets in Asia and Europe, driven by strong sales from brands both new and old. In fact, there’s been a 28% rise in global sales of EVs within the first five months of this year, amounting to around 7.2 million units.

It’s important to note that a lot of these sales are coming from China. In May for example, over one million EVs were sold in the country, a 33% increase compared to the same time last year. Data shows that out of the 7.2 million EVs sold worldwide this year so far, 4.4 million of those come from China. Furthermore, brands such as Xiaomi and BYD have to continued to expand their presence worldwide, as seen with Xiaomi’s strategic promotional efforts with the SU7 Ultra and BYD’s new Dolphin Surf launch.

In Europe, there’s been a 27% year-to-date increase with around 1.6 million cars sold from January to May, with the UK and Germany seeing growths of 32% and 45%. Meanwhile, Spain has seen a 72% surge in EV sales, with Italy at 58%. By comparison though, North America has seen relatively little growth, with just over 700,000 EVs sold across the US, Canada, and even Mexico (that’s just around 3% growth).
