Google has added yet another AI feature to its services. This time, it has introduced PDF summarization on Google Drive.
The feature, which as you may have guessed, is powered by Gemini AI. Summary cards are everywhere, you can find them in Gmail, and Search too.
When you open a PDF file in Google Drive, the cloud storage service will display a summary card on it. The summary is placed like a comment on the sidebar to the right. Google says that PDF summary cards will save users time by giving them the gist of their files, and get important pages quickly as opposed to manually searching through the pages.
You can interact with Gemini in another way too, the AI will also show relevant, clickable actions below the summary that it generated. The screenshot shows some example phrases such as “Draft a sample proposal” or “List interview questions based on this resume”. Clicking on these actions will instruct the AI to provide additional information that you may require. There is also an option called "Ask Gemini", which you can use to enter any queries that you may have.
The feature is not available by default, users need to have smart features and personalization turned on to access the AI-powered feature. PDF summarization in Google Drive is available for Google Workspace users including Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on, Google AI Pro and Ultra, and users who purchased these add-ons: Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise. The feature is available in 20+ languages. You can view a demo of it in action here. It looks like a useful feature, which may be particularly handy if you're working with PDFs that are long.
AI-powered summarization isn't exclusive to Google Drive, it is also available for Google Forms.
