Over the years, we’ve encountered various instances of hackers breaching carriers’ databases and selling the stolen information. T-Mobile is no stranger to this, but now hackers are claiming to have breached the carrier’s database (again?) and have put sensitive customer info up for sale.

T-Mobile customer info for sale

According to a Cybernews report, hackers claim to have breached T-Mobile’s systems. They also claim to have stolen 64 million records related to T-Mobile customer information and shared them on a data leak forum, where this type of information is typically sold.

The team at Cybernews examined the data sample and discovered that it contained information such as full names, dates of birth, tax IDs, full addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, device IDs, cookie IDs, and IP addresses. The data is innocent enough by itself; however, when used maliciously, it could enable criminal acts such as identity theft, financial fraud, and more.

T-Mobile is denying that a breach has taken place. In a statement, the company’s representative says, “Any reports of a T-Mobile data breach are inaccurate. We have reviewed the sample data provided and can confirm the data does not relate to T-Mobile or our customers.”

There is a chance that what T-Mobile is saying is accurate. This is because the report found that some of the emails in the leak match a data sample from past T-Mobile breaches. However, at the same time, some data points did not appear in previous leaks. The publication notes that it is impossible to verify the data with 100% accuracy, but states that if the data in this leak is new, it could have some serious privacy implications.

Past breaches

This isn’t the first time T-Mobile has been hit with a data breach. Over the past few years, T-Mobile has faced numerous attacks. This resulted in stolen customer data, for which the carrier eventually agreed to pay a fine of over $15 million. In addition to the perception of poor data protection, T-Mobile has been getting a lot of bad press lately.

The carrier has been walking back on some of its earlier promises to customers. They have also implemented the dreaded T-Life app and are forcing it down the throats of customers. They are also pushing employees to recommend the use of the app, and making employees write up reports if customers refuse to it use it.
