OpenAI has announced that free users now have access to ChatGPT's memory. But it does not offer the same experience that subscribers get.
In April 2025, OpenAI announced a feature called Memory, which allows its chatbot to remember helpful information from previous conversations. Essentially, it allows ChatGPT to recall things that you've shared with it, like your name, preferences, etc. The AI uses this data to tailor its responses to you, to provide more relevant information with a personalized touch. OpenAI says that this memory grows over time and performs better the more you use it. It will also recall specific things from previous chats, this would be your "chat history".
There's another kind of memory called "Saved Memory". Users can instruct ChatGPT about specific things by telling it to remember something about you. For example, you could tell it to “Remember that I’m vegetarian when you recommend recipes.” The idea behind this Memory feature is that you don't have to repeat yourself every time you have a conversation with ChatGPT. Using the same example, the next time you ask it for a recipe, you don't need to mention you are a vegetarian, it already has that information in its memory. This could improve conversations between the chatbot and the user.
Free users had been limited to "saved memories" like the one described in the above example. That changes now, as OpenAI has given ChatGPT a memory upgrade. It will not only remember saved memories, but is now capable of recalling content from past chats. This feature was previously only available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers.
However, OpenAI says that free users have a lightweight version of memory improvements, and that it provides short term continuity across conversations. Plus and Pro users have access to the full experience, which provides a longer term understanding of the user. So, it sounds like it may not recall data from very old chats for free users.
ChatGPT's Memory feature is enabled by default, i.e., it is an opt-out setting. You can turn it off from the following section in ChatGPT Settings > Personalization > Memory > Reference chat history.
It's worth noting that the memory feature is not enabled for users in the EEA (EU?+?UK), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein. While it may be convenient for some users, others may be concerned about their privacy. You may want to read the official help page for ChatGPT Memory to learn how to manage the feature, delete memories, etc.
