CD Projekt Red‘s (CDPR) next project, The Witcher 4, looks to be a stunning showcase for current-gen hardware. The developer recently confirmed its performance target for PS5, and players anticipating the next fantasy adventure from the studio will be pleased.
The Witcher 4 aims for 60 frames per second on PS5
In an interview with Digital Foundry, CDPR’s VP of technology, Charles Tremblay, explained why they had decided to show off The Witcher 4’s tech demo running on a PS5 at 60 frames per second. Tremblay says that in the past, they had developed the game with PC in mind, and then scaled down for console. However, due to problems in the past, like Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled console launch, they wanted to develop for the console first. As such, the developer is aiming for 60 fps on a base PS5.
As seen in the video, here are the key goals for CDPR as they attempt to hit that 60 fps goal for The Witcher 4:
- 60 fps with HWRT GI and Refelections
- Dense, large and dynamic forest
- Scalable at scale
- Smooth hitch-free traversal
- Believable interactive full of life village
- Fully utilize available hardware
- Room to grow gameplay features
Earlier this month, during The State of Unreal 2025, CDPR and Epic Games showcased The Witcher 4 tech demo for everyone to see. It featured footage of the game’s protagonist Ciri, traversing its open world, as well as a densely populated town. While the test footage wasn’t actual gameplay, it did give its audience a look at what CDPR is targeting, and the potential technical capabilities of a base PS5.
While The Witcher 4 is CDPR’s next project, that doesn’t mean it’s done with its predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to a recent report, the lauded RPG is getting DLC next year, 11 years after its initial launch.
