Hackers are trying every possible way to steal users’ private information. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that can be stopped instantly. Recent reports show that cyberattacks on smartphones have reached a new peak. So, what should users do to protect themselves from such attacks?

Cyberattacks on smartphones break records

The ‘IT threat evolution in Q1 2025: mobile statistics’ report, recently shared by Kaspersky, once again shows that smartphone users are under a serious threat. According to the report, 180,000 malware detections were made in the first quarter of 2025, and this marks a 27% increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

Kaspersky said the following about the importance of cybersecurity on smartphones: ”Users may mistakenly believe their smartphones are inherently more secure than PCs. However, the reality is that mobile malware, like the sophisticated Trojans we explored over the last months, are increasingly active.”

This data shows that a large majority of users do not pay as much attention to the security of their smartphones, which contain private information, as they do to desktop devices.

Kaspersky believes that there are several factors contributing to the growth in Android-based malware, the most important of which is the activity of certain malware families in certain countries.

For example, the Mamont banking trojan, which has been very active in recent months and can steal banking credentials, text messages, and, in short, private data, stands out here. We can also say that the Triada, which comes pre-installed with fake versions of popular smartphones, is part of them.

Unfortunately, it is not limited to these. Because smartphone users in Turkey are said to be in serious danger. Researchers say that trojans such as Coper, BrowBot, Hqwar, and Agent.sm are targeting users in the country.

So, what are the ways to stay safe?

Users can do quite simple things to protect against such Trojans. It is especially important not to buy imitations of popular phones sold at much cheaper prices. Such tech devices often bypass security checks. This makes them more vulnerable to pre-installed malware or easier targets for cyberattacks.

Another is that users should only download apps from official stores like the Google Play Store. However, criteria such as reviews, ratings, and even download counts of apps should also be taken into consideration. Finally, it is important to pay attention to what permissions apps request.
