Wordle hints (game #1463) - clue #1 - Vowels

How many vowels does today's Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1463) - clue #2 - first letter

What letter does today's Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today's Wordle answer is G.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It's often paired with an R to make GR--- or an L to make GL---, but I'm not revealing whether that's the case today.

Wordle hints (game #1463) - clue #3 - repeated letters

Does today's Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle hints (game #1463) - clue #4 - ending letter

What letter does today's Wordle end with?

The last letter in today's Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #1463) - clue #5 - last chance

Today's Wordle answer (game #1463) is… GLADE.

GLADE is another good example of Wordle's letter-trap games, although it's a two-letter affair not a one-letter thing as with the likes of MUNCH/BUNCH/HUNCH.

I'm talking about the -LA-E format, which has 15 solutions among the original 2,309 answers, making it the fourth most common in the game for those three positions. Those ahead of it, in case you're interested, are -RA-E (which has 20 solutions), -RI-E (18) and -RO-E (16).

GLADE only has six direct alternatives (I think), in the form of BLADE, GRADE, GLIDE, GLACE, GLARE, and GLAZE. These may well have tripped you up today and indeed, plenty of Wordlers did choose one of them at some stage.

But those other -LA-E words caused more trouble: PLANE, PLACE, PLATE, BLAME, FLAME, FLAKE and so on made up a huge number of the third and fourth attempts.

The game's average currently stands at 4.1 – proving that it's a tough one. To avoid a below-par score you'll have needed to have spotted the problem and played for it.

I sort of did that, but still needed a lucky guess to finish with a four. My first guess had again been poor, with CUTIE leaving 172 options, but SNARL cut that to nine.

It also gave me the --A-E format, together with a yellow L that I had a hunch would go before the A.

That gave me FLAME, FLAKE, GLADE, GLAZE, BLADE, BLAME and BLAZE, while putting L at the start provided me with LEAVE and putting it between the A and E left WHALE.

And that, miraculously and unusually, meant I had found all nine options. Maybe I'm finally learning how to play this game?

Narrowing them down was a different matter, though. I couldn't think of any word that would guarantee me a four, and neither could WordleBot. It suggested EMBED – which might have left a group of three but would otherwise solve it – whereas I went with FLAME.

FLAME was nowhere near as good as EMBED, in that it could have left a four-way choice, or a 50/50 between two other words. But it was the best I could come up with, so I played it and hoped for the best.

And, inevitably, luck was against me – because it left that four-strong group, which featured BLADE, BLAZE, GLADE and GLAZE.

I knew that the worst I could do now would be a five (because whatever I went for, it would rule out all of the others), so was free to pick my favorite. I went for GLADE because I thought the other three might all have been past Wordle answers and though it was merely a hunch, I was correct – they had.

That meant that GLADE was the only possible answer, so I duly scored my four.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1462)

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1462, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1462)

  • NYT average score: 3.6
  • My score: 5
  • WordleBot's score: 3
  • My skill score: 91
  • My luck score: 28
  • My start word performance: KNIFE (278 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot's start word performance: CRANE (57)
  • Tomorrow's start word: CUTIE

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1462) was… TAUPE.

The most notable thing about this Wordle is that it's the 18th solution that wasn't on the original answers list drawn up by the game's creator Josh Wardle.

Instead, it's been added by the New York Times' Wordle editor Tracy Bennett, joining a motley crew that includes the likes of GUANO, SNAFU, UVULA and BALSA.

TAUPE is nowhere near as difficult as those, to the extent that people are currently solving it in an average of 3.6 guesses.

Those three vowels will have helped here, as they did with Thursday's CURIO, as will the fact that STARE – the third most popular starting word – left only nine possible solutions.

My experience was rather different: I scored a horrible five. In my defense, WordleBot awarded me 91/99 for skill, but 28/99 for luck, so I think that tells the story of my game. It wasn't a vintage performance by any measure, but nor did I make a complete mess of it.

Sometimes it just isn't meant to be, and this was one of those occasions. KNIFE was not a great opening guess, but that wasn't my fault either, given that I play a random word each day. It left me with 278 words to narrow down, and only a green E at the end to go on.

For my second guess, I played it safe – theoretically – by choosing SOLAR. This included five of the six most common remaining letters, with T the only omission – a decision that would come back to haunt me.

But it needn't have been the case; WordleBot said it would have expected SOLAR to leave 13 answers, but instead it left double that number, 26. The 'Bot's suggestion was GRASP – which should have left 10, only a couple above my guess, but that in reality cut the shortlist to six. As I said, sometimes it just isn't meant to be.

That said, my third guess was not the best. I now had a yellow A, so decided to play ADAGE next in order to try to place it; by including it in two spots I'd surely turn it green.

That made some sense, but really I should have come up with a word that didn't include the E that I already knew was present, in order to gather more information. If I'd have gone with GAMUT, as WordleBot later suggested, I'd have had just two words left now – but instead I had eight.

Still, though I technically hadn't succeeded in turning the A green, there was now only one place where it could go – so I had -A--E and not too many letters left to add to them.

I didn't come up with all of the remaining words – not even close. But I did think of BATHE, CACHE, MATTE and MAUVE, missing HAUTE, MAYBE, PAYEE and – inevitably – TAUPE.

BUTCH was guaranteed to narrow down my four words and give me the solution in five, and fortunately I finally enjoyed some luck in that it also narrowed down the four words I hadn't thought of.

After spending a few minutes starring in bewilderment at the board, I realized that TAUPE was the only answer left and scored a frustrating five.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
