Today's Wordle answer (game #1445) is… ADMIN.
I always find it satisfying to spend a few hours doing ADMIN, whether at work or home. There's a sense of getting things done as I tick items off a list; it feels as though I'm making progress, being productive, and not a total failure for once in my sorry life… Who'd have thought that 'Book optician's appointment' and 'Renew pet insurance' could be the path to such mental wellbeing, eh?
Today's Wordle similarly gave me a nice warm glow of having Achieved Something, mainly because I scored a three. That glow only got brighter once I discovered ADMIN has an average score of 3.9, so it's 'standard' rather than 'easy'.
It's not difficult, though; there are no rare letters here, although D and M are generally middling rather than common, and no repeats. Nor are there lots of words spelled in a similar way – just one, ADMIT, which was played in large numbers by people today.
I was also delighted to see that WordleBot only scored a four. Call me petty, sure, but it's the little things that perk you up some days.
Admittedly, I had a big helping hand from my opening guess, REIGN, which left only 16 possible solutions. I had a yellow I and green N already, and with E ruled out figured I'd add an A to make an --AIN format at the back end of the word.
The question was what to put at the start. I nearly went with CHAIN, and also considered PLAIN, but in the end decided to work it out mathematically rather than just guessing blindly.
To do this, I drew up a list of all possible answers – and found 10 of the 16 that WordleBot later said were available.
Among those 10, STAIN gave me the best chance of success; it would guarantee me a three at worst, unless the answer was PLAIN or CHAIN, in which case I might score a four. Any of the others would leave more choices.
This wasn't a foolproof method, because it relied on me finding all possible solutions – and as it happened, I only had 10 not 16. Still, as luck would have it, STAIN did indeed leave only two answers. The only trouble was, neither were among my shortlist. I had another hunt and found them: CABIN and ADMIN.
I had a 50/50 for a three and could score no worse than a four, then. With no reason to pick one over the other I plumped for ADMIN and guessed correctly.

- Yesterday's Wordle answer is to primp.
Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1444)
- NYT average score: 3.6
- My score: 4
- WordleBot's score: 3
- My skill score: 90
- My luck score: 50
- My start word performance: IMPLY (154 remaining answers)
- WordleBot's start word performance: CRANE (2)
- Tomorrow's start word: REIGN
Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1444) was… PREEN.
If you use a list of past Wordle answers or have a very good memory, you'll know that GREEN has been a solution already – it was game #877 in November 2023.
By the looks of it, many people did not know that – because 3% went with it on the second guess, 11% on the third and 8% on the fourth.
WordleBot was among them, which meant that it had to settle for a three despite an incredible start with CRANE, which left only two words to choose from. Those were GREEN and PREEN, obviously, and it picked the wrong one.
This was not a problem I faced, because my opening IMPLY gave me a yellow P, and by the time I'd narrowed down the field to a handful of words I knew that it went at the start.
My problem was instead that first guess, because it left 154 options, and though SPARE cut them down to 10 I was never realistically going to score a three here.
And if I had faced a choice between GREEN and PREEN? Well, then like the 'Bot I would have guessed rather than checked. I have no problem at all with people who do look at a past solutions list, but although I have done it on occasion, I've always decided afterwards that it slightly cheapened my result.
That said, I fully reserve the right to change my mind in the future; after all, we have now had nearly 1,500 answers, and nobody could realistically recall them all.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics. Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh? It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free. Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak. The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. 1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green. 2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray. 4. Answers are never plural. 5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green. 6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance. 7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode. 8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle. 9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone. 10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However… 11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess. 12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years. What is Wordle?
