Before mobile became a thing, pretty much all websites were optimized for computers and computer monitors. However, as phones gained internet connectivity and smartphones became more mainstream, website developers started to optimize websites for mobile performance. We’ve come a long way since then, and recent figures are showing that smartphones now dominate the global web traffic.
Smartphones are dominating global web traffic
According to the latest figures from Techgagged.com, smartphones now make up most of global web traffic. In Q1 2025, mobile web traffic comprised 31.16% of global traffic. Fast forward a decade, and that number has doubled to a staggering 64.13%. This means that computer traffic makes up a third of web traffic worldwide, a very different tale compared to ten years ago.
Seeing as how the mobile landscape basically consists of two major platforms, iOS and Android, what does that market share look like? Unsurprisingly, Android makes up the majority of mobile traffic at 75.72% in May 2025, while Apple’s iOS commands 26.92% in May 2025.
We’re not surprised at these numbers. After all, there are many Android phone brands and models out there compared to the number of iPhones. However, the fact that Apple holds a little over a quarter of total web traffic is still impressive.
The report also breaks down which regions drive the most mobile traffic. It seems that Asia leads the charge for global mobile web traffic. China, India, South Korea, and Indonesia are leading the charge, which the report attributes to the availability of affordable smartphones and faster 5G. Asia also accounts for 71.3% of total web traffic, versus the Americas and Europe, where smartphones generate about 50% of total web traffic.
The rise of smartphones
Many users turn to smartphones for other needs, including accessing the internet, shopping, productivity, and gaming. This is why the mobile gaming market is extremely lucrative, especially with the appeal of playing games on the go. Plus, modern-day smartphones have come a long way since the early days, and many of them are capable of playing high-quality games that used to be only available on PCs.
In some countries, such as China, a lot of business is conducted on phones. Many users rely on their phones to act as digital wallets that hold personal information cards, credit cards, and more.
