It has been five years since Apple introduced the M1 Apple Silicon chipset. Since then, the company has rid itself of all Intel-based Mac computers. However, even though they don’t sell them anymore, Apple still offers support. That will change in 2027. During the Platforms State of the Union at WWDC, Apple announced that support for Intel Macs will come to an end in 2027.

Apple is ending Intel Macs support next year

According to Apple, macOS 26 Tahoe will be the last macOS release to support Intel Macs. This means that moving forward, starting with macOS 27, those updates will only be available for Apple Silicon-powered Mac computers.

This doesn’t mean that Apple is ditching support entirely. The company will continue receiving critical security updates for the foreseeable future. However, these Intel Macs will no longer receive major OS updates and the new features that are part of them.

Apple has already started to end support for some Intel Macs. This includes Intel-powered MacBook Airs and Mac minis, which will not be able to upgrade to macOS 26. The company still supports older Intel Mac computers, including the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 Intel 13-inch MacBook Pro, the 2020 iMac, and the 2019 Mac Pro.

We can’t say we’re too surprised. Many companies eventually ditch support for older devices. So ever since Apple started to phase out its Intel computers in favor of Apple Silicon, we knew that this day would come sooner or later.

macOS Tahoe—Meet Apple’s next macOS update

macOS 26 Tahoe was announced at the keynote of Apple’s WWDC 2025 event. It will be the next major update for the macOS platform. It brings a lot of changes and new features. However, the most notable is Apple’s new design language, which the company calls Liquid Glass.

It features a glass-like look that is reminiscent of Apple’s visionOS platform used in the Vision Pro headset. Some other new and notable features include support for iOS Live Activities and the introduction of the Phone app. This allows users to make and answer calls directly from their Mac computers.

Apple also appeals to gamers by bringing its new Games app to macOS. This will be a hub for games as well as a new gaming overlay that lets users tweak settings without having to leave their games.
