The T-Mobile T-Life app is not great, to put it mildly. Both customers and employees have plenty of complaints, but unfortunately, that’s the direction T-Mobile is taking in the name of efficiency. As if the app wasn’t bad enough, it turns out it could be spying on you. According to several posts on Reddit, users are discovering that the T-Life app is recording their screen.

T-Life screen recording is enabled by default

According to one of the posts, Redditor Remarkable-Cancel862 says, “I was just going through the iOS T-Life app and came across this setting. It was on by default, which I don’t care for.”

This was echoed by another post by Redditor OK_Theory5606 who, according to their post, is a former T-Mobile employee. “As I was digging around in T-life, I found an automatically enabled option (Manage -> Settings Gear -> Screen Recording Tool) that allows the app to screen record the entire time you’re in the app, under the guise of learning how you use the app better.”

While some apps do request access to certain privacy-related features, what makes this particularly egregious is that users were not asked for consent. If it were disabled by default, that would be fine because it means users can turn it on. However, judging by these posts, the feature is turned on by default and isn’t a particularly obvious feature either. This means that not all users are aware of it, let alone know how and where to turn it off.

There is some good news

If you are a T-Mobile customer with the T-Life app installed on your phone, there is some good news. It turns out that the T-Life app screen recording feature isn’t available across all phones. So far, only iOS users have reported the feature. Even then, it seems to be limited to the iPhone 16 series.

If you’re using an Android phone or an older iPhone, there’s a good chance you’re not affected by this. It doesn’t mean T-Mobile won’t expand the feature to your device, but for now, you’re safe. As many in the comments have pointed out, there’s no real need for a company to record your entire screen even under the guise of “making the app better.”

T-Mobile hasn’t had the best reputation lately, and this feature in the T-Life app isn’t doing the carrier any favors.
