Sony makes some of the best consumer headphones on the market, and it just added to its roster of devices. The company recently unveiled the WH-1000XM6 (XM6 for short) headphones, and they improve upon their predecessors in every way. According to a new teardown video, the Sony XM6 are much easier to repair than the XM5.

A device’s value doesn’t only come from its specs. It also comes from how long you can keep it in working condition. Sony made a few decisions with the XM5 that didn’t quite sit well with customers. For instance, they were not foldable. This made carrying them around a bit tedious.

However, the main issue was the fact that some of its replaceable components were not quite accessible. Certain parts, like the battery, were glued into place. So, if you wanted to swap it out, you could risk damaging the headphones. Thankfully, the XM6 show a change in mentality for Sony towards repairability.

As always, Sony brought a slew of changes and improvements with its new headphones. AS mentioned before, the XM5 don’t fold, whereas the XM6 do, which makes them better for traveling. Also, Sony included a convenient carrying case, which make some even better for when you’re on the go.

Sony also included an AI noise-canceling mode that isolates voices from the ambient noise. Along with that, the company added other great additions like better ANC, better call quality, better battery life (even though this iteration’s battery is smaller than the last), detachable ear pads, better audio quality, and Bluetooth 5.3.

If you’re a person who wants to keep your devices around for as long as possible, you will love the additions that improve the repairability. For starters, Sony didn’t glue the battery in place like it did with the XM5. You can easily take it out by unscrewing the two screws holding it down. This means that adding a fresh battery is quite easy.

You can’t only replace the battery, as the USB-C port, button board, and audio jack are all modular. This means that it’s easy to take them out and swap them if need be. In fact, you can easily unscrew most of the components in the headphones.

The fact that the Sony XM6 are easier to repair greatly increases their value. This is definitely needed, because these headphones jumped up in price over the XM5. You can order them on Amazon for $449.99.
