Android 16 is starting to take shape, but we can’t forget about Wear OS 6. This will power Wear OS smartwatches going forward. According to a new report, Google will fix a pretty annoying AOD feature when Wear OS 6 finally lands.
Wear OS has one of the most useful features that a smartwatch can have, and that’s called AOD. This stands for always on display, and it ensures that your watch face will always remain visible even when you’re not interacting with your smartwatch. This makes your smartwatch more like a traditional watch, and it makes for a more convenient experience. While in AOD mode, you will still be able to interact with the watch face or app that’s at the forefront.
However, Wear OS 5 had a pretty annoying feature. If an app supports AOD mode, then it won’t be a problem. However, if you’re using an app that doesn’t support the mode, and your watch goes into ambient mode, you will simply see a blurred background with the time displayed over it. You won’t be able to interact with the app unless you wake the screen. This can make media control apps bothersome to use.

Even though we’re dealing with a story about unreleased software, you won’t want to take it with that much salt. Google actually confirmed this. The company introduced what is called “Forced Global AOD Experience” with Wear OS 5.1, but it’s just a developer option at the moment. Basically, when you put your wrist down, the screen will dim, and the text on it will be just a bit bolder. However, as Google states, the “previous top activity remains visible and in the ‘resumed’ state when the device enters system ambient mode.”
This means that, when you put your wrist down, you will still be able to use the current app that is in the foreground. For example, if you’re a person who likes to keep media controls at the ready for when you want to skip tracks, all you have to do is lift your wrist and select the button you want to press.
Google will fix the AOD mode with Wear OS 6, and we are all for it. Who knows what other cool and exciting features Google will bring with this next watch operating system? Stay tuned, as more news will come out in the days leading up to the announcement.
