PS5 Update Apparently Adding New Animated Backgrounds

Sony‘s apparently staggering the rollout of a minor PS5 update that adds a new batch of animated backgrounds for the Welcome Hub. A system notification is popping up for players who’ve received the update, informing them of the addition of new video game-themed animated backgrounds.

No update on return of 30th anniversary themes for PS5

We first spotted reports of the update on Reddit but held off on sharing anything since we haven’t received the update on our end yet. However, we have since seen screenshots of the new animated backgrounds and additional reports from more players.

Those who’ve received the update now have access to animated backgrounds for games like Days Gone Remastered, Ghost of Yotei, Ghost of Tsushima, Demon’s Souls, God of War Ragnarok, and Horizon games, among others. Previously, we only had an animated theme for Astro Bot.

To check if you’ve received the update, simply go to the Welcome Hub, click on the Backgrounds tab, then select ‘Games.’ It’s also worth checking for system feature updates manually via the console menu. Do note that these updates are separate from firmware updates, and do not require a download.

Unfortunately, there’s still no word on the return of PlayStation 30th anniversary themes for the PS5, which Sony has promised will return at some point following fan requests.
