PS Portal Quietly Adds Option That’s a Step Towards Stand-Alone Handheld

The latest PS Portal system software update quietly added a feature that might be another step towards a stand-alone handheld. Sony didn’t make any mention of this on the PS Blog, but the patch notes for firmware update 5.0.0 reveal that players now have the ability to restore licenses directly via the device’s “Troubleshoot” option in the quick menu, eliminating the need to use a PS5 for the task.
PS Portal has been taking baby steps towards a stand-alone handheld, and update 5.0.0 brings welcome features
Since Sony didn’t go into any details, I’m only speculating why the ‘Restore License’ feature was added. However, it’s not a stretch to assume that the option isn’t limited to validating PS Plus Premium memberships or DLC and add-ons.
In recent months, Sony has been making an effort to split the PS Portal from the PS5, giving players the option to bypass the console altogether via direct cloud streaming (currently in beta).
Those who own PS Plus Premium already have access to a pretty big library of games that can be streamed directly on the handheld. Just last month, I reported that almost all of March’s PS Plus lineup can be streamed on the Portal without turning on the PS5.
Based on this, I’m assuming that the new Restore License option isn’t as minor as it seems. I think it will eventually be used to allow PSN users to stream any game they own without a PS5. When that’ll happen is anybody’s guess, however.
