PS5 exclusives 2024

Five years after launch, the PS5 leaves much to be desired when it comes to first-party PlayStation exclusives, players reckon. While there’s no shortage of great games to play this generation, one can’t help but notice the scant PlayStation Studios output, especially in comparison to the PS3 and PS4 eras.

PS5 first-party exclusives slate bogged down by misadventures

The latest discourse was sparked by a Forbes article that has been making rounds on gaming forums. In light of Marathon’s development troubles and delay, journalist Paul Tassi wrote at length about the state of PlayStation exclusives in this generation, arguing that the PS5 slate falls behind its predecessors.

Fans seem to agree. We’ve noticed that an increasing amount of PlayStation fans are starting to admit that the PS5 hasn’t produced the kind of heavy hitters we saw in the last two generations, which we can partly blame on ballooning budgets and constantly increasing development times. But there is also the elephant in the room that we’ve talked about multiple times before: Sony’s expensive live service misadventures coupled with remaster after remaster.

There’s no shortage of talent at PlayStation Studios. Sony is home to some of the best developers on the planet. But we haven’t seen anything new or original from a large number of them in the PS5 generation.

In the early days of the PS5, there was a running joke about Insomniac Games carrying first-party output, releasing several bangers rather quickly. But even that came to a halt. The studio revealed Wolverine nearly four years ago, and we haven’t heard anything since.

We’re pinning a lot of hopes on the PS6 considering some highly-anticipated first-party games are expected to launch next gen, including Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic and Santa Monica Studio’s mystery IP. But as it stands, Sony’s first-party slate is currently the driest it’s ever been.
