Today's Wordle answer (game #1467) is… COMFY.

Is this my worst ever game of Wordle? I think it might be.

Not because it's an easy Wordle – at the time of writing, it has an average score of 4.5, making it a very difficult one. No, it's because I somehow needed six guesses despite an opening word that left only 13 options. Oh dear.

I'm still not really sure how I made such a mess of it. If I'd played sensibly here I could easily have scored a three. A four should have been a cinch. A five should have been the absolute worst that I could have ended up with. I am baffled.

That said, it is a tricky one. Nobody expects an M and F to go together; it doesn't happen in any other five-letter word, as far as I can see. Plus, there are quite a few other words that have the C---Y format.

My opening CURRY was one of them, and that gave me the first and last letters. From here, I should have sailed through it. Instead, I came up with only five options: CATTY, CANDY, CADDY, CANNY and CAGEY.

You may well notice that they all have a CA combination at the start. All I can think is that my brain dismissed the possibility that any other vowel could follow the C, for reasons that I am in the dark about. My brain is not my favorite thing right now.

CO would have given me COCKY, COMFY, COYLY and COVEY, plus (according to WordleBot) COPAY, which seems an unlikely solution. I could also have had CHEWY, plus two more CA words: CABBY and CAMPY (the latter of which again seems unlikely).

With my mind focused on the five words I had found, I played DINGY – which the 'Bot rated at only 46 for skill. If I'd have played NAMED, as suggested by the 'Bot, I'd have had only one possible solution left; instead, I still had nine.

Worse still, by not playing the A in the first guess, I was still unaware that this was not a CA word – so I guessed CATTY, expecting to score a three. But no, it wasn't that… and it didn't include an A.

Cue a frantic search for other words, which yielded only COYLY and COCKY. I played the first of those first, got it wrong again, then rather than risk another guess when I only had two attempts left, took a proper look at the board and came up with COVEY and COMFY in addition to COCKY.

Finally, I knew what I was doing, playing SMOCK to choose between them and eventually taking my medicine in the form of a six. Please feel free to castigate/commiserate with me in the comments.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1466)

In a different time zone where it's still Tuesday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1466, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was E.

We don't get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it's the most common letter in the game, it's only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

  • There were repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1466) was… ELITE.

I have never been, and will never be, a member of the ELITE. The rich and famous, the landed gentry, the multimillionaires (or even just millionaires. Or even, frankly, someone who has actual money, as opposed to debts). The top athletes and musicians and authors and entertainers. The bestest of the bestest.

And you know what? I am absolutely fine with that, it all looks like a lot of stress and effort.

Instead, I am content to focus on nothing more than trying to be an elite-level Wordle player.

I have no idea whether I would qualify as that; my 1,268-strong streak might have put me in that rarefied air, but I can't prove it due to the NYT's continued inability to cope with people playing in different time zones. Maybe I can enter some kind of Wordle tournament someday and make a claim for greatness.

Until then, I shall have to be satisfied with days like this, where I scored a three on a game that has an average of 4.1.

ELITE has a repeated E, which is not particularly uncommon compared to some repeated letters but which is still a complication. It's arguably the only troublesome factor here, though, so I'm a little surprised people are struggling to this extent.

My success stemmed from my randomly chosen start word, DENSE, which confirmed that double-E format at the first attempt. That left only 22 options, and when I followed up with the delightful word TWERP, I cut that to three.

All three were easy to identify: ELITE, ELATE and EMOTE. Choosing between them was harder, though. There was no point in playing EMOTE, because it might have left a 50/50, but ELITE and ELATE would both guarantee a four at worst, and I couldn't recall either having appeared before.

In the end I went for ELITE without any justification for doing so, and got lucky.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
