Electronic Arts (also known as EA) announced it is canceling its Black Panther game and closing studio Cliffhanger Games. Additionally, the company is cutting staff from its mobile and central teams.
What did EA say about closing Cliffhanger Studios?
According to IGN, an email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele was sent to staff regarding the cancellation and studio closure. Miele writes that this change, as well as other recent layoffs that saw roughly 300 roles made redundant, are to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” The email also confirms that EA is attempting to place those impacted by the layoffs in other roles.
“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
Miele’s email also states it will continue focusing on the Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends franchises. Work will continue on Motive’s Iron Man game, the next entry in the Star Wars: Jedi series, and BioWare’s next Mass Effect game.
The email does not mention EA Sports. IGN mentions that since EA Sports is a separate division, and Miele runs EA Entertainment, the absence makes sense. IGN also states that EA Sports is not impacted by these changes.
EA and Marvel had partnered to make three games based on the comic book company’s characters. This included the aforementioned Iron Man game from Motive and this now canceled Black Panther project from Cliffhanger Games. Originally announced in 2023, EA’s Black Panther game was an open-world action-adventure game from former developers of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
As part of the recent layoffs from April that impacted around 300 employees across EA, an unannounced Titanfall game was canceled by Respawn Entertainment.
