Apple is all set to host its 36th annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) from June 9 to June 13. At the conference, the Cupertino tech giant could introduce iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, visionOS 3, and more. In addition, Apple will launch an app focused on video games that’ll replace the Game Center service at the same event, according to a Bloomberg report.
Apple could replace Game Center with a new gaming launcher
As per the source, Apple plans to launch a unified gaming app for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV set-top box to replace the Game Center service later this year. With the dedicated gaming app, Apple is seeking to “sell gamers and developers on the idea that it’s a leader in the market. The company will preinstall this application across its product lineup.
Furthermore, the source suggests that this app will serve as a launcher for titles. It will also bring together in-game achievements, leaderboards, communication, and social features that the company currently has scattered across its ecosystem. Apple’s new gaming application will replace its long-dormant Game Center service, which it launched in 2010. However, the service failed to gain significant traction among users.
Besides, Apple’s dedicated gaming app will offer editorial content highlighting new titles and direct access to the App Store’s gaming section. It will also promote the company’s $6.99 monthly Apple Arcade subscription service.
Moreover, the company has planned a Mac version of the app, which can display games downloaded outside the official App Store, addressing a key limitation for desktop gaming enthusiasts.
The app could be a competitor to services like Xbox Game Pass
Apple’s new app will aim to integrate gaming into the company’s broader ecosystem. The company could position the app as a competitor to established services like Xbox Game Pass. It will have an emphasis on exclusive content and a smooth experience for gamers across its devices.
The leak regarding the app arrived soon after Apple acquired RAC7, the gaming studio behind the popular Sneaky Sasquatch title on Apple Arcade. Also, the developments come as gaming generates nearly two-thirds of Apple’s App Store revenue through game sales and in-app purchases.
Initial reports of the app first surfaced last year, with Bloomberg’s latest report adding credibility to Apple’s expanding gaming ambitions.
