There’s something addictive about TikTok, and its algorithm is to blame. The app’s algorithm is really clever at suggesting new videos to watch. Which in turn makes you stay on the app longer and keep watching it. In the meantime, TikTok gets rich by feeding you tons of ads. But it’s not healthy. This is why TikTok has announced a new meditation feature in the app that will help users fall asleep.
TikTok’s new meditation feature

TikTok had previously rolled out the meditation feature to teens under 18. According to its findings, 98% of teens who took part in the test ended up keeping the feature turned on. That’s actually kind of impressive. This is why TikTok has decided to roll the feature out to all users, regardless of age.
“We recently announced a feature test to encourage young people to switch off at night. In our testing, 98% of the teens kept the meditation experience switched on. Research shows us that mindful meditation can improve sleep quality in people of all ages, so we’ll also introduce Meditation in Sleep Hours to all our users, regardless of their age.”
However, the company notes that the feature will be enabled by default for teens under 18. For adults, you have the option of turning it on if you think you have a problem putting your phone down. These prompts will show up gently the first time, but if you ignore it, the subsequent popups will be harder to dismiss.
According to TikTok, “For teens under age 18, it will be turned on by default. If a teen decides to use TikTok after 10pm, their For You feed will be interrupted by a guided meditation exercise, helping them wind down for the night. If a teen decides to spend additional time on TikTok after the first reminder, we show a second, harder to dismiss, full-screen prompt.”
Donating to mental health organizations
TikTok recognizes the need for better mental health. This is why, in addition to the new meditation feature, it is making a $2.3 million donation in ad credits to 31 mental health organizations across 22 countries. The goal is to help these organizations create better and more engaging mental health content for audiences worldwide.
