No, Google won’t force you to use a split system for your notifications and Quick Settings, it will be optional. Well, at least according to the latest report that surfaced, courtesy of Mystic Leaks. That’s the same source that shared the Pixel 10 wallpapers and some other info prior to that.

Many Android smartphone OEMs offer split Quick Settings, even by default. Most of them do offer you the option of merging the two, however. Well, it seems like Google is also aiming to do the same, though luckily the switch will be optional.

You’ll be able to split your notification and quick settings layouts in Android 16

Mystic Leaks seems to have spotted a split notification shade design, though. In that setup, only the notifications and the media player would appear when you swipe down from the left side of the status bar. Quick Settings/Tiles and the media player controls are shown when you swipe down from the right side of that status bar.

Android 16 separate notifications and quick settings leak

This change was ditched by the latest Android 16 QPR beta, but, the options may not be dead in the water. Mishaal Rahman said to Android Authority that the split design may not be gone just yet.

‘Separate’ and ‘Classic’ options are mentioned

The visual elements of this may not be a part of the latest beta build, but the public beta build still contains strings referencing these plans. The Split View will be available as an option called ‘Separate’, while the current option is called ‘Classic’. Those are the current names, at least.

If Google ends up rolling this out at some point, you’ll be able to find the setting in Settings -> Notifications & Quick Settings. It remains to be seen if this option will be available in the first stable Android 16 build, though.
