Work at Amazon? AI Might Be Coming for Your Paycheck

Without a doubt, AI will replace the need for some jobs in the future. Currently, AI can help us write, generate images and videos, and code. It isn’t exactly on the same level as humans yet, but with improvements, it will get there. This is why Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is warning that AI could result in jobs being cut over at Amazon.
AI will cut jobs at Amazon
Jassy did not mince words when he warned that Amazon will reduce its headcount over the next few years. He cites the efficiencies of AI systems, particularly the ones Amazon is building, that could reduce the need for human roles in certain departments.
“As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”
According to Jassy, Amazon is working on or has already built more than 1,000 AI services and apps. This is also a “small fraction” of what the company plans for the future. This is definitely something Amazon employees probably don’t want to hear. However, as the saying goes, when one door closes, another door opens.
Potential opportunity
When smartphones launched, they created a whole new job market in app development. Software engineering has been around for decades. However, the ease with which companies like Apple and Google make it to create apps has created many opportunities for developers.
The same philosophy is applicable here. While AI will replace some roles, there are other roles and areas that people can explore. Jassy acknowledges this. In fact, he encourages employees to “be curious about AI,” and that curiosity could pay off in the future.
“Those who embrace this change, become conversant in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and deliver for customers, will be well-positioned to have high impact and help us reinvent the company.”
Amazon does not state how many employees will be affected by this. However, the company has laid off more than 27,000 people since 2022, so we doubt they’ll be slowing down anytime soon.
