Right now, there is a legal battle going on that could have an immense effect on the smartphone industry. Qualcomm, the massive chipmaker behind the Snapdragon processors, is tangled up in a lawsuit against Collabo Innovations Inc. Well, the judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit against Qualcomm. As such, the lawsuit will proceed.
What was the lawsuit about?
Collabo Innovations Inc. is a tech company that purchased the patent for a specific kind of microcontroller chip. This chip handles a system’s shutdown process, and the patent originally came from Panasonic.
However, according to the lawsuit, Qualcomm infringed on that patent and used the same type of microcontroller for its chips. So, Collabo Innovations Inc. is suing Qualcomm, but it’s suing the company for more than just money. Qualcomm will likely have to pay money and damages. The company may also need to stop using the patented microcontroller in its chips. If that happens, then all of the devices that will use future Qualcomm chips could see some effect.
The judge will not dismiss the lawsuit against Qualcomm
Obviously, Qualcomm did not want to take this sitting down. The company wants to defend itself against this lawsuit, as it will have sweeping consequences for its business. As such, it asked the judge to dismiss it.
However, its request came crashing down. According to the report, the judge said that there’s some debate over the term “microcontroller.” The lawsuit will continue as planned, and the company will need to go through the full legal process. There’s still hope for Qualcomm, as the fact that the judge did not dismiss the lawsuit doesn’t guarantee that Qualcomm will lose it.
Right now, we can’t say which chips will change if Qualcomm loses the lawsuit. The company usually announces its latest Snapdragon chips in the fall, but it starts testing its chips earlier in the year with its partners. So, even though Qualcomm’s latest chip won’t get an announcement until later this year, it’s probably already being tested. As such, if Qualcomm loses the lawsuit, we probably won’t see any effects until sometime next year, if not the year after that.
