PlayStation Showcase or State of Play rumored for May 2024

Around this time of year, Sony shares some of its biggest reveals for its most recent console. However, the scale of its presentation typically dictates the hype of its announcements. While many are hoping for a PlayStation Showcase this year, it seems Sony has settled for a State of Play presentation, which may be a disappointment for fans.

Insiders claim Sony has settled on State of Play presentation instead of a PlayStation Showcase

In a recent episode of Game Mess Mornings, insider Jeff Grubb claimed Sony will not hold a PlayStation Showcase. For those unaware, the company typically holds these showcases when it has multiple big announcements for its first-party hardware and games as well as major third-party reveals. Instead, like the company has done in the past, it will have a State of Play presentation in June.

“Someone commented on ResetEra, NateDrake, who is reliable, and says he hasn’t heard anything about a May event from Sony this year,” says Grubb. “I haven’t either, but that’s because something’s happening in June. It’s a June thing. They’re doing something in June. Now, is that going to be a big Showcase? I don’t think so. I’ve said a couple of months ago that I heard that they were discussing, going back and forth about doing a Showcase or a State of Play. Sounds like they’ve probably settled on a State of Play; I’m not 100 percent about that aspect of it. It’s probably a State of Play, though. But I have heard June.”

PlayStation State of Play presentations do include some pretty hyped announcements. The one held in February revealed Housemarque’s follow-up to Returnal called Saros, which some would consider a PlayStation Showcase level announcement. However, it is typically populated with smaller announcements rather than every reveal being a hit. In short, the scale of State of Plays are much smaller than the grandiose Showcases.

As expected, this is a bit disappointing for PlayStation fans hoping for a larger presentation from the company. Some have voiced their opinions on the matter in a ResetEra thread.

“If they’re smart, they are going to retire the ‘showcase’ branding,” says user AuthenticM.

“Big off, they’re cooked, taking L’s, no games,” says user Pai Pai Master.

Make sure to check back for when this supposed June PlayStation State of Play is announced.
