The Pixel 10 might look a lot like last year’s model, but don’t be fooled. Under the hood, it’s shaping up to be one of the most meaningful upgrades in years. Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 10 lineup on August 28, and this time around, it’s bringing real hardware improvements, starting with a faster fingerprint sensor upgrade.
Following the move to ultrasonic tech in the Pixel 9 series, Google is once again upgrading its fingerprint sensor. It’s still ultrasonic, but this year’s version is reportedly even faster and more responsive, according to an exclusive report from Android Headlines. Compared to older Pixel models that used optical sensors—including the Pixel 6a, which was notorious for sluggish unlocks—Google has clearly come a long way.
Face unlock will still be part of the package, too, and it’s no slouch. Since the Pixel 8, Google’s facial recognition has met Class 3 authentication standards. This makes it secure enough for banking and payment apps. That same level of biometric security is sticking around for the Pixel 10.
Perhaps the biggest leap, though, is what powers it all. The Pixel 10 will reportedly debut with the Tensor G5 chip. This is Google’s first fully custom, in-house silicon, designed from the ground up without reliance on Samsung’s foundries. This marks a turning point for the Pixel line. It allows Google better to optimize performance, power efficiency, and AI features.
So while the outside might look familiar, the Pixel 10’s internals are getting a serious boost—and the upgraded fingerprint sensor is just one part of a much bigger story.
