Sony quietly announced a new PS5 game today, causing concern among fans about PlayStation Studios first-party output. The game in question, which has yet to be unveiled, is a multiplayer game in development at new Sony studio teamLFG. Its description has everyone scratching their heads.

Fans express concerns about PlayStation Studios games in light of recent cancellations

“Our first game is a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games,” reads a statement from the newly-established teamLFG. “Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

We’ve already written about the confusion caused by “frog-type” and this mishmash of genres in our previous article. But what has everyone puzzled is Sony’s decision to greenlight the project after a series of live service disasters that saw dozens of games canceled, and a newly-released game (Concord) shelved.

Sure, Sony has had success with Helldivers 2 and the jury is still out on Marathon. We also recognize the need for live service games for a sustainable revenue stream. But what’s being described here is extremely unappealing, to put it mildly.

I have yet to see a single comment across gaming forums and social media that expresses excitement — something Sony’s first-party announcements are typically good at garnering.

Here’s hoping players’ concerns are unfounded and teamLFG isn’t producing another multimillion dollar disaster.
