Qualcomm and Apple are leading the way in semiconductor technology. Both companies have released chips built on the 3nm process and plan to introduce 2nm chips in the coming years. Huawei is still lagging compared to US chips, but it seems that it isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
Huawei wants to catch up to US chips
Speaking to the People’s Daily newspaper, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said there is “no need to worry about the chip problem.” His statement is based on concerns that the US export controls will have an impact of Huawei and its chips. Ren also downplayed Huawei’s chipmaking capabilities. “The United States has exaggerated Huawei’s achievements. Huawei is not that great. We have to work hard to reach their evaluation.”
However, he does note that Huawei isn’t too far behind the US. Ren states, “Our single chip is still behind the U.S. by a generation. We use mathematics to supplement physics, non-Moore’s law to supplement Moore’s law and cluster computing to supplement single chips and the results can also achieve practical conditions. Software is not a bottleneck for us.”
Finding alternatives
Being placed on the US Entity List and the US-China trade war have made semiconductor advancements in China much tougher. However, this doesn’t mean that China and Huawei should be written off just yet.
Indeed, many semiconductor companies rely heavily on Dutch company ASML’s EUV machines. However, from what we have heard, companies like SMIC are finding alternatives to using lithography machines. From what we know so far, SMIC’s yields aren’t great. An earlier report pegged SMIC’s 5nm yield rates at around one-third, while also costing 40-50% more compared to companies like TSMC.
This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible, but it will be a slower process. However, we imagine that China and Chinese semiconductor companies are playing the long game here. The trade war and being denied access to advanced technology has shown that China shouldn’t rely too much on the West, and that developing its own technology will create a more sustainable future.
Only time will tell how China and Huawei’s semiconductor ambitions will play out, but for now, Huawei isn’t giving up.
