Last year, Google rolled out an update to the Gmail app that introduced AI-powered summary cards. For those unfamiliar, this feature would use AI to summarize an email at the tap of a button to make it easier for users to get the gist of it. But now, Google has introduced another update that makes these summaries automatically.

Automatic Gmail summary cards

According to Google’s announcement, these summary cards will now automatically appear in Gmail. “Starting today, summaries will be available at the top of the email content for messages where a summary is helpful, such as longer email threads or messages with several replies. Gemini will synthesize all the key points from the email thread and any replies thereafter will also be a part of the synopsis, keeping all summaries up to date.”

Prior to this, users who wanted a summarized version of the email would have to tap a “Summarize this email” button at the top. There’s nothing wrong with this method. But it seems that Google really wants to force its AI services onto everyone whether they like it or not.

This change is available on the Gmail app for both iOS and Android. Just make sure you’re updated to the latest version and you’re good to go. Google notes that for now, it only works on emails in English. Google also says, “Emails that do not show summary cards will continue to support user-triggered summaries with the ‘summarize this email’ chip at the top of emails or the option to summarize using Gemini in the side panel.”

Other Gmail AI features

AI summaries aren’t the only Gemini feature on Gmail. Earlier this month, Google rolled out AI-powered smart replies on Gmail. This is an enhanced version of Gmail’s smart replies. It uses Gemini AI to detect the context of the message. It then give users more comprehensive and relevant replies they can use instead of typing it out.

Before that, Gmail’s smart replies were limited to responses like “Thanks!” or “Sounds good!”. While that works for shorter emails or emails that don’t warrant a lengthy reply, it’s not that useful if the reply needs to be more thoughtfully written out. Google also revealed that it is employing AI to block scam emails.
