Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced on June 10 that they will start testing the native DMs on Threads this week. They have selected Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina to begin the testing. Meta plans to introduce the feature in more countries soon.
Separate inbox for DMs on Threads soon
Meta, finally, is bringing the DM feature to its Threads app on Android, iOS, and web apps. The lack of native DMs on the Threads is one of its drawbacks. Users have to use Instagram DMs to communicate with others. Getting a separate inbox for DMs on the Threads apps on various platforms is big news for loyal users.
Meta will add a new envelope symbol at the bottom of the Threads app on Android and iOS. On web apps, it will show on the left side panel. Users can simply click the new envelope button to access the native DMs and enjoy messaging.
Though it is currently unclear when the feature will be available for all, testing in limited countries is a promising move.
Meta listens to users to bring the most sought-after DMs feature
Threads was launched in July 2023 as a rival platform to X (formerly Twitter). When X was going through a lot of issues, ranging from leadership to technical troubles, Meta introduced Threads. Meta leadership made the right call to launch Threads to position itself as the perfect alternative, as it was meant to be just an Instagram feature earlier. They made the process of creating a Threads account effortless, using an existing Instagram account. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri opined that users do not need another inbox for Threads, as both Instagram and Threads are interlinked. He planned to “make the Instagram inbox work” for Threads.
Users who shifted to Threads from X, which has an inbox, disliked not having native DMs on Threads. Exiting the Threads app and switching to the Instagram app to message other users seemed like a task. It becomes impossible to maintain separate personas and keep the following list separate. At one point, they both have to merge to use the inbox feature on Instagram.
To avoid such dilemmas, Threads users have been requesting native DMs since its launch. Meta has now listened to and acknowledged the requests by announcing the plan to test.
The timeline for the wider rollout of native DMs is not clear. The testing will take a significant time as they may add more countries to reach more users. It will be a long wait for users to communicate with native DMs on Threads.
