Google recently announced Material 3 Expressive as the updated design guidelines for Android. The company already introduced the first “Expressive” guidelines for Android 16 and began adapting its own apps to the new UI. Now, leaked images offer a first look at the Material 3 Expressive redesign of the Google Pixel Camera app.
The Mountain View giant designed Material 3 Expressive with the idea of offering a more colorful, user-friendly, and visually appealing interface while maintaining the focus on simplicity and functionality. The leaked images show that the Pixel Camera app follows these guidelines.
What’s Changing in the Pixel Camera App with the Material 3 Expressive redesign?
As spotted by Android Authority, the most visible changes so far appear in the Settings menu. Instead of the plain, utilitarian look, the new interface features a warm brown-toned background with white. There are also rounded boxes containing the various control options. This layout introduces more spacing between elements, making it easier to scan and interact with settings.
Toggle switches have been revamped as well. They now display a tick mark when enabled and an “x” when disabled, offering a subtle but clearer way to see which features are active. The switches themselves have a brown color tone that complements the background. This creates a more cohesive and modern aesthetic.
While these updates are currently limited to the Settings page, Google is likely to extend the Material 3 Expressive design throughout the entire app, including the camera viewfinder and other key screens. After all, their goal is to provide a consistent and immersive experience.
What is Material 3 Expressive?
Material 3 Expressive is Google’s latest evolution of its Material Design system, which first debuted as Material You in 2021. The goal is to make Android’s interface more personal, dynamic, and emotionally engaging. This means more customization options, smoother animations, and a design language that feels alive and responsive.
The redesign emphasizes natural motion, such as springy animations and fluid transitions, to make everyday interactions feel more intuitive and satisfying. It also introduces new typography styles and shape options to better highlight important information and create a visually rich experience.
Material 3 Expressive is not just about looks—it’s designed to improve usability and accessibility while allowing users to express their personality through their device’s interface.
When Can Users Expect the Update?
Google has not announced an exact release date for the Pixel Camera app’s Material 3 Expressive redesign. However, it is expected to arrive alongside later this year in a future Android 16 build.
