Android Auto and Android Automotive can be a great addition to any vehicle, but they’re likely to get a lot better thanks to the inclusion of Gemini, which should let you manage a variety of smart home products, all while behind the wheel. You can already do this with Google Assistant, of course.

That being said, Gemini is a more powerful AI tool that lets you do more. So, naturally, it being able to allow smart home control management is a big deal. Because that means you won’t be losing that capability if you have Android Auto or Android Automotive with Google Assistant. You might think that smart home management from your car is less important, but consider how convenient it is. You’re on your way home and from the car, you ask Gemini to turn on the AC because it’s hot outside. You then arrive home to a cool environment. That definitely sounds like a useful trick.

Gemini for Android Auto will let you manage all Home devices linked to your Google account

It’s not clear just yet what the scope of Gemini’s smart home capabilities will be. However, Android Authority has discovered strings of code in the most recent version of the Google app that more or less give it away.

Managing devices like the lights and the thermostat is a given. Although the code doesn’t expressly mention this, the code does mention control of Home devices. Specifically, all Home devices that are linked to your Google account.

That means you should be able to control any smart home device that you can see in the Google Home app. That would include smart TVs, lights, thermostats, fans, and a wide range of other products. It’s unclear when Google will be rolling this out to Android Auto and Android Automotive users. Chances are it’s not too far off, but that doesn’t mean it’s right around the corner, either.
