The long-awaited foldable iPhone might be closer than you think. We’ve been hearing about the company’s potential entry into this competitive segment for a long time. Apple has been known for being late to certain technologies, setting its own pace, and this seems to be one of those cases. Meanwhile, a new report reveals that Apple will begin production of the foldable iPhone as early as this year.
Ming-Chi Kuo: foldable iPhone production begins this year
The latest information comes from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to the post on X/Twitter, production for Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone is set to begin as early as the third quarter of 2025. If not, manufacturing will start as early as the fourth quarter—essentially, this fall. This crucial step puts Apple on track for a potential launch in the fall of 2026, likely as part of the iPhone 18 lineup.
The production timeline for the device seems to be firming up. However, it’s worth noting that Apple is reportedly yet to finalize many key specifications for this groundbreaking device. This means that while the production gears are starting to turn, some important decisions about components and features are still being made behind the scenes.
Apple still deciding on key specs
One detail that has been solidified is the display. The foldable screen itself will be produced by Samsung Display, a common partner of Apple for this section. Kuo suggests that Samsung Display is preparing to churn out between seven and eight million foldable panels specifically for the 2026 foldable iPhone. Apple reportedly aims for a massive order of 15–20 million total foldable iPhones.
Other elements, like the hinge design, are also reportedly still being ironed out. Early rumors hinted at an approximately 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display for the device. But with specs still in flux, these could certainly change.
This news signals Apple’s serious entry into the foldable market. We’re still a couple of years away from seeing the finished product. However, the start of production later this year marks a major milestone. The device’s price will likely be a determining factor in its success or failure. The Apple Vision Pro headset showed that an incorrect price tag can “doom” a product.
