Apple has announced Workout Buddy, a new feature on watchOS 26 to enhance users’ fitness experience, during the WWDC 2025 event on June 9. The one-of-a-kind feature provides personalized and motivational insights using the user’s fitness data with Apple Intelligence. The new feature debuts with watchOS 26. It will be available on Apple Watch with Bluetooth headphones and work along with an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone.
Workout Buddy feature analyzes user fitness data using Apple Intelligence
Workout Buddy uses user data like personal fitness milestones, workout history, etc., and analyzes it privately and securely using Apple Intelligence. Then, it generates a dynamic voice using a new text-to-speech model for the user to listen to. To maintain the right energy, style, and tone, it uses the voice data of Fitness+ trainers. When a user starts a workout using Workout Buddy, it will give a personalized pep talk. The Workout Buddy feature on watchOS 26 gives tips to reach fitness goals for the week, tips to maintain pace, and more.
During a workout, it monitors heart rate, pace, distance, Activity ring goals, etc., and motivates the user to hit the goals. For example, while you jog outdoors, it lets you know your speed, time taken to reach a mile, number of miles covered, etc.
Reach your fitness goals with Workout Buddy on the Apple Watch
In simple words, Workout Buddy works similarly to sports commentary on live sports. It motivates, informs, and steers users to the right path of their fitness journey. Workout Buddy analyzes outdoor and indoor runs, outdoor and indoor walks, outdoor cycling, HIIT, and “Functional and strength training.” It currently generates voice in English. Apple may soon add support for other workouts and languages.
Apple, during its announcement of watchOS 26, announced a slew of new features for Apple Watch along with Workout Buddy. They include a fresh look based on a new design called Liquid Glass. It has an improved Smart Stack with prediction algorithms using the user data. Apple added four new buttons to the corners of the app for improved layout and navigation. To play music or podcasts automatically while working out, users can set them in the Workout app.
Additionally, the Live Translation feature automatically translates messages to a user-preferred language using Apple Intelligence. It will be available on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 with an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone. WatchOS 26 makes it much easier to manage notifications with a simple wrist-flick gesture. The wrist flick gesture helps dismiss notifications, calls, silence alarms, etc.
Apple has made the watchOS 26 developer preview available from June 9. The public beta will be available in July. The exact release date for all may be announced at a later date. It is expected to be released in September 2025.
