6 Beginner Tips To Help You Survive Arrakis In Dune: Awakening

The planet of Arrakis is unforgiving from the moment you exit the character creator, and it's where you'll spend your entire journey in Dune: Awakening. There is constant heat, scavengers looking to gun you down, and the mighty sandworm that threatens your every move across the vast, sandy desert. While Dune: Awakening does offer some in-depth tutorials, those can only take you so far. So, to help get your adventure started on the right foot, we have put together six beginner tips that you'll want to make sure you know before putting too many hours into the MMO. Don't fear the sandwormEasily the biggest threat at all times in Dune: Awakening is the sandworm. This mighty, underground behemoth of an enemy is always lurking beneath the sand, and whenever you make your way across the desert, you'll feel the vibration of the monster. While you want to make sure you're not dilly-dallying in the sand between rocky formations, the sandworm will usually have a hard time killing you as long as you're sprinting. For starters, the sandworm initially pops up from the sand to make a dramatic entrance. Then, several seconds after this, the worm will start to chase after you with its mouth open. However, as soon as you reach the outskirts of a rocky formation, it will stop chasing you. In nearly every situation, you can make it across the desert without the sandworm even making an appearance. So, with this in mind, don't worry too much about venturing out beyond the safety of the rocks in Dune: Awakening. Of course, still be mindful of the vibration meter on your screen when going across the desert. The sandworm can still kill you if you're not paying close attention to where you're going. Follow the main questIt might sound like a no-brainer, but following the main set of missions in Dune: Awakening is the best thing you can do during the first several hours of the game. The main missions will allow you to establish a foundation for your character, as the missions guide you through leveling up your character, setting up stations at your base, and providing you with crucial knowledge about how to get blood/water and stay alive. After a while, when you feel like you know what you're doing in the world, you can veer off from the main missions and start to complete some side quests, work on your base, or explore the map a little more. For the early game, though, follow the quests on your screen. Build your base in a productive locationWithin the first hour or two of Dune: Awakening, you'll be tasked with constructing a base. While it might be tempting to build your base right where you started the game, that's not the most optimal route to take. Instead, you want to build your base near plenty of activity. Heading to one of the tradeposts, base camps, or near a hot spot of scavenger camps are all ideal places to build. Being in close proximity to these spots at the start of the game will ensure that you always have access to the resources you need, such as Salvaged Metal and Fuel Cells. Of course, you also want to find a safe spot when building your first base. Building on top of a rocky formation or embedding your base into the rocks is the best way to go, as you don't want to build on the sand and risk a sandworm attack. Loot anything and everythingIt's a classic MMO cliche, but looting everything you possibly can at the start of Dune: Awakening is only going to benefit you in the long run. Even if you feel like you're looting the same resource over and over, you can easily craft storage containers at your base to hold everything you're collecting.Loot such as Granite Stone, Plant Fiber, Salvaged Metal, Fuel Cells, Micro-sandwich Fiber, and EMF Generators are all early game items that you want plenty of as you get further into building your base and unlocking new research. Take advantage of respawn timersOne major gameplay mechanic that's not explained in Dune: Awakening is respawn timers. Everything on the map is on a respawn timer; this includes resources, enemies, and chest loot. This means that after you kill an enemy, scavenge a piece of loot, or collect items from a chest, you can repeat the same process after the respawn timer has been reset. For example, if you loot a chest from a scavenger camp, you can wait around one in-game day and go back to that camp. When you go back, the chest's loot will be there again, along with any enemies that you killed or other loot you took. This is a fantastic way to farm certain resources as long as you know where certain resources are located. It's wise to memorize a specific route that you can take after the respawn timer resets so you never run out of key resources you need.

Don't fear the sandworm

Easily the biggest threat at all times in Dune: Awakening is the sandworm.

Follow the main quest

It might sound like a no-brainer, but following the main set of missions in Dune: Awakening is the best thing you can do during the first several hours of the game.

Build your base in a productive location

Within the first hour or two of Dune: Awakening, you'll be tasked with constructing a base.

Loot anything and everything

It's a classic MMO cliche, but looting everything you possibly can at the start of Dune: Awakening is only going to benefit you in the long run. Even if you feel like you're looting the same resource over and over, you can easily craft storage containers at your base to hold everything you're collecting.

Loot such as Granite Stone, Plant Fiber, Salvaged Metal, Fuel Cells, Micro-sandwich Fiber, and EMF Generators are all early game items that you want plenty of as you get further into building your base and unlocking new research.

Take advantage of respawn timers

One major gameplay mechanic that's not explained in Dune: Awakening is respawn timers.

Utilize the map and Survey Probes

The map is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal in Dune: Awakening. Not only does it show you where major points of interest are located, but you can also see exactly where specific resources are found.

Your map will continue to open up as you explore more areas, but you can expedite this process with the use of a Survey Probe. This device shoots a probe into the sky and uncovers everything on your map in the region where you shot the probe. After the probe is complete, you can open your map to see every bit of information possible.

Constructing a Survey Probe is a part of the main quest in Dune: Awakening, but we recommend you load up with probes and use one every time you're in a new location on the map. This way, you'll uncover the map as quickly as possible so you're always prepared for whenever you venture to a different area.
