At this point, TikTok might as well not be banned in the US. The app was initially slated to be banned earlier this year if it did not give in to the US government’s demands. However, when Trump became President again, he extended the ban’s deadline. He has done it twice, but now Trump is giving TikTok a third reprieve.

Trump just saved TikTok a third time

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, she has confirmed that Trump has extended the TikTok ban a third time. “President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running. President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark.”

This extension, which will run another three months, means that if and when the ban goes into effect, it will be mid-September. However, like we said, at this rate, it’s hard to see that happening. It was reported earlier this month that Trump could extend the ban, and now it is official.

It seems that the Trump administration is still holding out on the hope that it will be able to find a buyer for TikTok in the US, and also get China’s approval. However, he seems pretty confident that he will. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump was quoted as saying, “Probably, yeah. Probably have to get China approval but I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.”

So far, we don’t have official confirmation of who TikTok’s buyer might be in the US. Many names have been floated, although last we heard, Oracle was the favorite. However, finding a US buyer is just one part of the story.

China’s reluctance to let TikTok go

Finding a buyer in the US is one thing. The other is getting China’s approval. China has several key pieces of technology it deems as “core” or “essential.” This means that there are heavy restrictions on them. For example, they cannot be owned by a foreign entity or exported.

For some reason, China viewed TikTok’s algorithm as a “core” piece of technology. This is why the Chinese government is reluctant to let it go. The US government had previously tried to use TikTok as a bargaining chip in its trade war with China. This escalated to some pretty high tariffs, which the US later backed down on.

At this point, we have to wonder if it might be better for the US government to just let it go.
