The iPhone 17 Air Is So Thin, Even a Case Can’t Bulk It Up

The iPhone 17 Air will be Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. We’ve seen various dummy units and renders that show how thin the phone is. But if you’re worried that slapping a case on the iPhone 17 Air will somehow ruin that illusion, trust us, you don’t have to worry.
A video posted on X by @LusiRoy8 shows what is allegedly the iPhone 17 Air sitting pretty inside a case. Now, normally, cases add a bit of bulk and weight to a device. While we can’t speak to how heavy this particular case is, we are kind of amazed to see that it doesn’t add that much bulk.
Even inside the case, the iPhone 17 Air still looks ridiculously thin, so color us impressed. Unfortunately, if you are planning to buy the iPhone 17 Air, you’ll have to be willing to make some sacrifices.
Sacrificing battery life for thinness
According to the rumors, Apple is making the iPhone 17 Air as thin as possible. In the process, Apple had to compromise on certain components. This includes the phone’s battery. We heard that Apple is planning to use a new type of high-density battery. This means the battery is thin, but can still hold a lot of juice.
Sounds good on paper, doesn’t it? However, a recent report claims that despite Apple’s best efforts, it isn’t a very big battery. The report claims that during internal testing, Apple found that the percentage of users who can probably get a full day’s worth of battery is between 60% and 70%. This is compared to other iPhone models which typically scores between 80% and 90%. So much so that Apple might release an optional battery case to help boost battery life.
It’s not surprising that Apple had to compromise on certain hardware specs and features to get the iPhone this thin. So, if you plan on picking one up, battery life is something you’ll have to take quite seriously.
The iPhone 17 Air will replace the iPhone 17 Plus in this year’s lineup. It’s Apple’s first brand new iPhone model in the past few years, and its thinnest one yet. The iPhone 17 lineup will consist of the base model, the Air, and the Pro and Pro Max series. If Apple keeps its schedule, we’ll see the phones announced later this year, most likely around September.
