In what came as a big surprise to many fans, Japanese gaming giant Square Enix recently announced that it was bringing over a remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics to modern consoles, decades after the game’s launch on the original PlayStation back in 1997.

Launching later this September for several gaming platforms, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will feature remastered graphics for higher-resolution displays, tweaks and quality-of-life changes to the game’s turn-based battle mechanics, as well as full voice acting, the latter of which was not available during the game’s first versions.
We say “versions” as this is not the first time that FF Tactics has been ported to other systems—since its launch, the game has been made available for the PlayStation Portable (known as War of the Lions), as well as Android and iOS, although the latter two releases were also based on the PSP version.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles releases on September 30, 2025 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam with special pre-order bonuses which you can check out here.
