Snap has just announced at AWE 2025, that it plans to release its next-generation AR glasses in 2026. This would be the sixth-generation of glasses and it gets a shorter name. Instead of being ‘Spectacles’, it’ll be called simply ‘Specs’.

With these launching next year, Snap was not sharing any details about pricing or an exact launch date, since those details are likely still up in the air. Snap, did however, mention that the new glasses will be smaller and lighter than their predecessors. Snap last launched a pair of Spectacles in September 2024, which was aimed at Developers only, and cost $99 per month, under the leasing model.

The Specs are a consumer-focused pair of glasses and will run on the company’s Snap OS. Developers will be able to include Google’s Gemini AI models in programs that they develop for the smart glasses. This would give coders more AI options to choose from as they write software for the device. Before, Snap only had support for OpenAI’s GPT family of AI models.

“We couldn’t be more excited about the extraordinary progress in artificial intelligence and augmented reality that is enabling new, human-centered computing experiences,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in a statement.

Snap is facing more and more competition in this space

Snap launched its first Spectacles back in 2016, and they cost just $130. They were a bit before their time, and Snap has really changed how this product works and how its positioned in the market since. Originally, Spectacles were made for recording content to post on Snapchat. Now, they are full-fledged AR glasses.

The company is facing more and more competition in this space now. Apple recently launched its Vision Pro headset for $3,500, which has been a failure by all accounts. Apple is reportedly working on a lighterweight version that will cost far less. Meta has its Meta RayBan glasses, which have been incredibly popular, particularly among content creators. Meta also has plans for an upgrade to those glasses, as well as other full-fledged AR glasses.

Not to mention, Google launched Android XR last year, and is working on a pair of glasses itself, that we got a chance to check out at Google I/O last month.
