Wordle hints (game #1456) - clue #1 - Vowels

How many vowels does today's Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1456) - clue #2 - first letter

What letter does today's Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today's Wordle answer is G.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It's often paired with an R to make GR--- or an L to make GL---, but I'm not revealing whether that's the case today.

Wordle hints (game #1456) - clue #3 - repeated letters

Does today's Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle hints (game #1456) - clue #4 - ending letter

What letter does today's Wordle end with?

The last letter in today's Wordle is T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Wordle hints (game #1456) - clue #5 - last chance

Today's Wordle answer (game #1456)

Today's Wordle answer (game #1456) is… GHOST.

I'm convinced that I saw a GHOST when I was aged four and woke in the middle of the night to a spooky figure bending over my baby sister's crib. The figure wore a flowing white gown (just like in the movies) and gently soothed my sister, before gliding out of the room.

My family strongly assert that this ghostly apparition was merely my mother, who admittedly did own a white robe, but I'm sticking with the paranormal explanation.

Of course GHOST also has a few other meanings, one of which is common in dating app circles. Or so I'm told; my dating days are 20 years behind me and my partner would really not be happy if I started ghosting her now…

As well as being a good, emotive word GHOST has an interesting spelling, with a GH beginning that is found in only two of Wordle's 2,309 original solutions.

The other is GHOUL, another spooky word, and that was the answer to game #687 in May 2023. You therefore never again need to watch out for that format; well, unless the NYT throws in another one, but I don't know what word that would be.

For the second day in a row I got reasonably lucky with my random start word. My openers have been VEGAN yesterday and BEGAN today, an entirely coincidental succession of words that are spelled almost identically. On both occasions the word gave me a yellow G, although today that was my only uncovered letter.

That left 57 options, apparently, but I didn't attempt to find them all; I'm not that much of a masochist. I did, however, know that GR is one of the most common opening combinations (it's sixth), so I played GROUP and crossed my fingers.

GROUP was a little unlucky, and still left six words to choose from. And at this point I did try to identify them. I came up with four: GLOOM, GOOFY, GOODY and GLOWY, but missed both GLOSS and – inevitably – GHOST.

I thought that GLOOM had been a past Wordle answer (it had) and remembered that GOODY definitely had (in February this year), so played GOOFY and was a bit stumped when no letters changed color. That meant it couldn't be GLOWY either, so I had another look and found GHOST.

GLOSS was still an option too, but I remained blind to this and played GHOST. I might have ended up with a five but got lucky and scored a four.

How did you do today? Send me an email or let me know in the comments.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1455)

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1455, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it's the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1455) was… BILGE.

I don't know what it is about the word BILGE but it always sounds slightly wrong.

Maybe it's because there are, as far as I know, no other words in the English language that have an ILGE pattern; it's simply not a sound you generally hear. I always think it sounds a little rude, even though it obviously isn't and doesn't even resemble anything that is. I don't know what it is about it, but it's… odd.

None of which prevented me from scoring a three, which was very welcome after a run of 4-4-5-4. And this against an average of 4.0 and on a day when WordleBot scored a four. The humanity vs AI comeback starts here.

Admittedly, I was helped by my start word, VEGAN, which left me only 47 options whereas the 'Bot's CRANE left 128. I could never be a vegan, I don't think; I've been a vegetarian for most of my adult life, but the idea of living without cheese (or only being able to eat vegan cheese) terrifies me. Anyway, it was a good opener for me today, giving me yellow E and G.

I came up with a shortlist of sorts. It was by no means comprehensive, and wasn't intended to be so, but I was hopeful that it would point me in the right direction for the third guess.

My list had RIDGE, MIDGE, DODGE, PODGE, BODGE, FUDGE, BUDGE, GOUGE, ROUGE, DIRGE, PURGE, FORGE and GORGE on it, and with those words in mind I decided to go for ROUGE next. My reasoning was that almost all of my words had either an O or U in them, and many had an R too. No, I'm not a deep thinker.

None of R, O or U turned up in the end, but that helped me out even so, because I now knew the word was almost certainly going to contain either an I or a second E. I looked at the board again and came up with BILGE, LIEGE and MIDGE – but not, somehow, SIEGE, which was the other possible solution at this stage,

If I had found SIEGE I would probably have played it, but fortunately I hadn't – so I went with BILGE instead and got lucky for a three. I think I was due a little luck, frankly, after a difficult week.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
