Gaming can be a wonderful pastime or hobby if you’re looking for something fun and exciting to fill your downtime. The best part about games is that there are so many different kinds that there’s generally something available for everyone. Regardless of what your tastes or preferences are when it comes to games, no doubt you’ll be able to find something suitable for you.
This is all the more possible on mobile, in part because mobile is still the fastest-growing gaming platform globally. And when it comes to mobile, you’ll find every single genre of game you could ever possibly want. Whether it’s strategy games, MMOs, open-world RPGs like Genshin Impact, action games, or something more relaxing, you won’t want for choices. Of course, there’s something to be said for diving into a mobile game that doesn’t really require 100% of your attention.
You can think of these as hyper-casual games that may not necessarily be completely hands-off, but they do embrace the state of no pressure while offering new and exciting ways to play. Hyper-casual games are also the most popular genre on mobile at the moment by number of downloads in the US. With that in mind, here are some games that fit the hyper-casual mold, along with some that may not be hyper-casual, but they’re just too good to ignore.
Mini Metro
We’re kicking things off with Mini Metro, because if there was ever a game that could capture the essence of hyper-casual and relaxing, Mini Metro is it. It’s certainly not the only one, of course, but it features a no-stress gameplay style that really draws you in and keeps you coming back for more.
Mini Metro launched on Android and iOS in 2016, so it’s not exactly a new game, but it is likely to be new to many people. It’s also an extremely good game that is unlike many other options on mobile. So it’s a fitting game worthy of a highlight here. Your main goal is to design a subway map for a growing city. Along the way, you’ll have to connect and cross subway lines to meet the ever-evolving demands of the citizens.
The subway maps are based on real-world cities, and there are over two dozen different cities to play through. There’s also a new creative mode that allows you to build the subway however you want. It’s a casual game that you can feel good about putting down, if you can put it down, that is. And if you fall in love with it, there’s also a Mini Motorways you can play on Steam, which is highly recommended.
Hungry Hearts Restaurant
If you really want to get hyper-casual with your gameplay, then you may want to check out Hungry Hearts Restaurant. The Hungry Hearts series has been around on mobile for a while, and the latest offering is Hungry Hearts Restaurant. As the name suggests, this is a restaurant management sim game about running a restaurant and feeding the hungry patrons.
But there’s much more to it than that very basic description. In Hungry Hearts Restaurant, you’re helping an old woman and her granddaughter run a local restaurant in a quiet corner of Tokyo, Japan. After a recent re-opening, there are lots of hungry customers waiting to try out this establishment’s beloved food. The more you feed them, the more you hear about their stories, and the more the game’s story unfolds.
You’ll be able to learn new recipes to feed the diners and decorate the restaurant to make it cozy and inviting. As this is a management game, you’ll also need to upgrade parts of the restaurant to improve your meal output and learn new recipes as well. If casual is what you’re after, you can easily pick this up for 10-15 minutes and then put it down again for days, and not feel stressed out that you’re missing out on something.
Balatro
Balatro isn’t really a hyper-casual game, but it is pretty casual and it’s very addictive. It’s the perfect game for anyone who wants a mix of casual and action-packed excitement. Because that’s basically what you’re getting here with Balatro. At its most basic, Balatro is a mix of poker and solitaire. However, it amps things up by giving you all kinds of card power-ups you can acquire to boost your score and/or create a stronger hand.
As you play, you can unlock special Joker cards to strengthen your deck and eventually face off against bosses. There are over 150 different Joker cards to discover, and each one of them has a different power. So, it’s definitely important to find as many of these as you can, as the next one you find could be the one to help you if you ever get stuck.
If you like card games but don’t care for the stressful nature of playing a real game of poker against somebody, this game is for you.
mo.co
The last game we’re highlighting is a new title called mo.co. It comes from Supercell, the makers of hit mobile games like Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, but it takes a very different approach to gameplay than both of those games. I like to think of it like an homage to Monster Hunter, but scaled down for mobile and lacking any copyrighted content. Of course, it’s not entirely a Monster Hunter clone as it offers features Monster Hunter doesn’t have. Such as competing against other hunters in a PvP mode.
You’ll be able to “explore parallel worlds” and hunt down and defeat “chaos monsters,” and doing so will allow you to level up, strengthen your gear, and fight harder monsters. You can also customize your gear setups for specific fights. Additionally, you can team up with other hunters to fight more difficult monsters that you may have trouble with on your own.
Best of all is that Supercell made this game to be enjoyed in bite-sized chunks. So, even if you only have about 15 minutes to play, you can still get in some good game time.
There are many more exciting ways to play
While these are the games we’ve highlighted for some casual enjoyment, there are tons and tons more mobile games that are easy to pick up and put down. It’s also worth noting that not all of these games are free, but the ones you’re paying for are among the cream of the crop and deliver a very rewarding gaming experience. With that said, whether you want something that plays to your love of a good meal or something to tease your brain and get you thinking, these games won’t disappoint.
