Google launches futures fund to support AI startups

Google has announced the launch of the AI Futures Fund, a new initiative aimed at backing startups that are building products using the company’s latest artificial intelligence models and research.

The initiative offers startups direct equity investment, early access to Google’s AI models—particularly from DeepMind’s Gemini series—and technical support from Google’s product and research teams.

Rolling investment program

Unlike traditional startup accelerators, the AI Futures Fund will not operate in fixed cohorts. The fund has no set size or application deadline. Instead, Google will evaluate opportunities on a rolling basis, allowing it to adapt to the needs of early- and mid-stage startups as they emerge.

Investment amounts will vary depending on the company's stage and strategic fit. Google noted that the program is open to companies across sectors, as long as they are building products or services that meaningfully incorporate AI.

DeepMind and Gemini access

Selected startups will gain early access to models developed by Google DeepMind, including the latest iterations of its Gemini models. These models, which combine text, code, image, and multimodal capabilities, are central to Google’s push into advanced generative AI.

The fund also provides engineering guidance, product feedback, and go-to-market support from across Google’s teams, according to the company’s official announcement.

Complementary support from Google Cloud

The AI Futures Fund is designed to work alongside existing Google initiatives, including the Google for Startups Cloud Program, which offers up to $350,000 in cloud credits and technical support. Additionally, Google recently expanded its collaboration with Nvidia, bringing its Blackwell GPU architecture to Google Cloud by early 2025.

This partnership includes support for generative AI startups, particularly those needing access to high-performance infrastructure and cloud-based training environments. Startups participating in these programs may benefit from both infrastructure and financial support.

Position in broader AI strategy

The AI Futures Fund is part of Google’s broader strategy to assert leadership in the competitive AI development landscape. With Microsoft, OpenAI, Amazon, and other tech firms aggressively expanding their startup engagement efforts, Google’s new fund represents a direct effort to deepen relationships with emerging AI companies and technologies.

The initiative builds on earlier funding programs, such as Google’s Gradient Ventures, but is more directly tied to the company’s core AI models and infrastructure.
