Apple to launch AI tool in iOS 19 to boost iPhone battery life
Apple is preparing to introduce a new artificial intelligence-based battery management system as part of its upcoming iOS 19 update.

Apple is preparing to introduce a new artificial intelligence-based battery management system as part of its upcoming iOS 19 update. The feature is designed to extend iPhone battery life by using on-device AI to analyze user habits and optimise power consumption accordingly.
Smarter battery management with AI
According to Apple Insider reports, the core of the feature lies in real-time analysis of how an iPhone is used. By monitoring usage patterns—such as which apps are frequently opened, when users typically charge their phone, and which features consume the most power—the AI system dynamically adjusts background processes to reduce unnecessary energy drain.
For example, if certain apps are rarely used or only active during specific times of day, the system will limit their background activity when not needed. This kind of adaptive behaviour is similar to Google's Adaptive Battery feature for Android, which uses machine learning to prioritise power usage for commonly used applications.
New visual battery features
Alongside performance improvements, iOS 19 will introduce new visual cues related to charging. Apple plans to add a lock screen indicator that displays the estimated time remaining until a full charge is achieved. This provides greater transparency to users and aligns with Apple’s trend of offering more granular battery insights, which began with features like battery health reporting and optimised battery charging in previous versions of iOS.
Tailored for future devices
While the AI-powered battery optimisation tool will be available for all iPhones that support iOS 19, it has reportedly been designed with upcoming devices—specifically the rumoured iPhone 17 Air—in mind.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a notably slimmer and lighter form factor, which could lead to a smaller battery size. The AI system is being positioned as a compensatory measure, helping to preserve battery life without compromising on design ambitions.
Notably, Apple is expected to perform most of the AI processing directly on the device rather than in the cloud, keeping with its emphasis on user privacy. This on-device approach ensures that personal usage data used to optimise power management does not leave the phone.
WWDC launch expected
The AI battery management feature is expected to debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where iOS 19 will be officially unveiled. As with previous major software updates, the public rollout is expected in September, following a developer beta and public testing phase.
