Sony celebrated the 30th anniversary of PlayStation in several ways, most notably with a limited edition console based on the PS1. There was also one feature it introduced that many players loved, and were saddened to hear that it would be taken away. However, that all changes as the company is returning the feature in a new PS5 update.

Classic PlayStation themes return in PS5 update

Sony announced a new PS5 update would be rolling out globally tomorrow, April 24. A PS Blog post says it will bring “new enhancements” to the PS5, but really only give details on two of those enhancements. One of these is what players have been asking for since it was introduced during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Yes, the classic PlayStation themes are returning.

For those who somehow missed the beloved PS5 customization options, there were four themes, each based on the previous four consoles. It even played the original startup sound and screen, fueling the nostalgia of PlayStation gamers around the globe. When the PS5 update is implemented, players will be able to find an “Appearance” option under the Settings menu.

“Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, we’re happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5,” reads the post.

The other feature coming with the PS5 update is called Audio Focus. This allows players using headsets to focus on certain aspects of the audio experience. There will be four presets that range from boosting low-frequency sounds to boosting voices. Here are the four preset options for Audio Focus:

  • Boost Low Pitch:  Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises.
  • Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds.
  • Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises.
  • Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies.

Additionally, players can choose where to set the level of support for each preset, as well as adjust the left and right channels separately. It should be noted that this feature is not supported for HDMI connections through TV, AV receivers, or soundbars. It is exclusively available when using headphones connected with a USB or analog connection.

Now that Sony has brought back the classic PlayStation themes, will this open the door for more themes based on specific releases? We’ll just have to wait and see.
