Summary
- Couch co-op RPG Sunderfolk is available today for Xbox Series X|S.
- Use your phone to control turn-based action on a shared screen.
- Up to four players can join seamlessly, either in-person or remote.
Sunderfolk is officially out today, and the team here at Dreamhaven is so excited for Xbox players around the world to experience the wonder and whimsy of Arden, and the mysterious evil that threatens its animal inhabitants.
The creators at Secret Door hand-crafted this game with a deep love for classic board games and tabletop RPGs, and a goal of creating a seamless co-op experience for both veterans and newcomers. By turning your smartphone or tablet into an all-in-one controller, Sunderfolk eliminates the traditional board game hurdles and allows players to join the adventure almost instantly.
Jump Straight into the Action
While Sunderfolk supports parties of up to four players, you only need one copy of the game to assemble a full party. On starting the game, you’ll be presented with a QR code, which can be scanned either in-person or remotely via screen share. For new players, this will download the free Sunderfolk app to your device, and a second scan of the code using the app will sign you into the game. This is where the journey begins – it’s that simple.
The host will still need an Xbox controller to navigate the main menu and basic settings, but in-game, each player controls their character on the shared screen using the app. Basic traversal, selecting moves in turn-based combat, and activating equipment are all accessible from your device, keeping the main screen free of distracting clutter. The app’s streamlined interface gives quick access to your character’s info, inventory, and rulebook, and with intuitive touch-based controls, every action is fluid and frictionless.
Easy to Learn, Thrilling to Master
Sunderfolk may be simple to pick up, but there is tremendous depth to the game’s RPG progression systems and turn-based combat. There are six distinct classes to choose from at the outset, from the brute-force Berserker to the clever Rogue, and with no set turn order, there are limitless ways for your team to prevail.
Each mission will bring your party deeper into the Sunderlands, a cavernous underground world filled with menacing foes, priceless treasures, and surprising new friends. With every victory, you’ll unravel more of the game’s story, and your party of heroes will grow stronger and better equipped to defeat the forces threatening Arden. In between outings, you’ll return home, where you can unlock and upgrade vendors, trade treasures for new equipment and skills, and deepen relationships with allies around town.
And whether you’re in for a single mission or an all-night marathon, you can save your progress until your party is ready to resume the campaign. If you get the same gang together, each player can resume their role, or a new friend can pick up where another left off (though the heroes and their respective progress will be locked to each save file). You can even control multiple characters on one device, so you’re never left shorthanded due to a party member’s last-minute visit from grandma.
The fate of Arden depends on you and your band of heroes, so grab some friends, some snacks, and a spot on the couch, and make Sunderfolk your new game night favorite! Visit sunderfolk.com to learn more, and join our growing community in our official Discord server.
