Edinburgh-based CSignum raises over €6.9 million to scale underwater wireless communication technology

CSignum, a Scottish specialist in wireless communications for submerged environments, has secured over €6.9 million in Series A funding to support the growth of its innovative EM-2 technology and expand its global operations. The funding round was led by Archangels, Par Equity, and Scottish Enterprise, with additional backing from British Business Investment (BBI), Raptor Group, Deep Future, SeaAhead’s Blue Angel Network, and several individual US investors.

Founded in 2020 and based in Bathgate near Edinburgh, CSignum has developed a wireless communication system capable of reliably transmitting data through water, ice, soil, rock, and concrete environments that have long posed challenges for real-time monitoring. Its patented electromagnetic field signalling (EMFS) is the foundation of the company’s EM-2 product family, which is already being used in water quality monitoring, ship maintenance, and underwater infrastructure security.

This latest investment will help CSignum meet growing demand for wireless data transmission in both underwater and underground environments, particularly as environmental regulations tighten. The company is working with clients across the UK, EU and US, where new compliance deadlines — including those under the AMP8 initiative — are driving demand for large-scale, real-time monitoring solutions.

“This investment reflects the growing recognition of the critical need for innovative communication solutions in the underwater IoT sector,” said Jonathan Reeves, CEO at CSignum. “The support from our investors will allow us to scale our operations, enhance our product offerings, and help industries worldwide manage their resources more effectively.”

The funding will be used to expand the engineering team, develop the company’s product portfolio, and grow its presence in international markets. CSignum also offers data services through its CSignum Cloud platform, providing analytics and dashboards for projects such as river water quality monitoring.

Dan McKiddie, Investment Manager at Archangels, commented: “CSignum has developed a truly unique technological breakthrough which could be a game-changer for those industries reliant on securing reliable data from their underwater operations.”

Claire Cramm, Investment Manager at Par Equity, added: “CSignum’s ability to deliver reliable and cost-effective communication solutions for challenging environments sets them apart in the market. This funding will accelerate their journey to becoming a global leader in underwater data transmission.”
